Winkler, who played the Fonz in the 70s show, entertained pupils, parents and staff at Ludworth Primary School, in Marple Bridge, with tales of his own reading challenges.
He also introduced the children to his Hank Zipzer books, about a 10-year-old boy with dyslexia, based on his own experiences.
Winkler, 62, took time to have a tour of the school before signing books and taking questions from pupils.
He said: "I have had such a warm and fabulous welcome. The children were fabulous.
"I have never been to this part of the world before and I think it really is beautiful."
Speaking about his experiences with dyslexia, he said: "School was unbelievably hard.
"Such a large proportion of people have learning difficulties. Hopefully my books will give kids confidence and realise they are not alone."
Years on from the motorcycle, leather jacket and thumbs-up, Winkler still talks fondly about the Fonz. He said: "I love the Fonz. He put a roof over my head and paid for my kids' education."
Winkler's visit to Ludworth Primary is part of a tour of schools for the National Year of Reading.
