THE identity of a man who died after appearing to jump in front of a tram is still a mystery.

Police say there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and will pass the case to the coroner.

But, because he had no possessions with him at the time, they cannot find out who he is and trace relatives.

The man - thought to be in his late teens or early 20s - was hit by the tram between Windmill Street and Manchester Central in the city centre.

Rescue teams freed him from underneath the carriage and took him to the Manchester Royal Infirmary.

But the injuries to his head and chest were so severe that doctors and paramedics were unable to save him.

Trams coming into the city from Altrincham and Eccles had to terminate at stations in Old Trafford and Salford Quays instead as a result of the incident.

The knock-on effect delayed people heading into the city centre for part of the morning.
