Pedal power helps orphans

Abigail Reid is ready to get on her bike to help

TWO sisters from Old Trafford are getting on their bikes to help a family of orphans in Jamaica.

Abigail Reid, 36, and her sister Samantha Etim, 28, both of Woodstock Road, have pledged to raise cash to educate the youngsters they befriended on the Caribbean island.

The sisters first met the Williams family in 2006 while visiting their brother, who emigrated to Jamaica in 2001 and lives in the same district – called Manchester – as the children.

At that time Mrs Williams had recently died giving birth to her 10th child.

Shortly afterwards, the children’s father died at sea.

Abigail said: "We went over there again for my sister’s wedding in January and we all brought some bits for them in our luggage, but we could not carry enough for all the children, which was very sad.

"Extended family have tried their best to help but it’s tough, and the children are now dispersed and living with relatives.

"In order for them to have any sort of life in Jamaica they need a good education, and initially that is what our fundraising will supplement."

Abigail, who is married with a four-year-old son, and Samantha have named their fundraising cause Lisa’s Life, after one of the older Williams siblings.

On Saturday, June 28 they will ride 24 miles across Chester to raise money.

Abigail said. "A couple of friends have also got involved, and we have received support from local radio station All FM and Dougy’s Caribbean Takeaway in Old Trafford.

"But we still need assistance in getting printed T-shirts to wear on the ride, someone to design a website for us and someone who will pay for the hosting of a website for a year, which would be about £40.

"We’re not a registered charity, just a few people who want to make a difference, and we are hoping that local businesses may wish to lend their support."
