Maya Nelson was about to reach for the fruit when she spotted a Huntsman spider.
The spider is not poisonous but its bite can cause irritation and swelling.
Maya, eight, from Heaton Mersey, was at home with her grandmother and mum when she unwrapped the bananas from Tesco, in Burnage.
Inside was the three-inch wide orange spider which had travelled thousands of miles from the Caribbean.
Maya said: "I screamed my head off and ran into the garden but granny stayed calm. She put it in a plastic box and pierced the lid with holes. I couldn't believe it had come all that way."
An expert from Manchester Metropolitan University identified it as a Huntsman.
He said: "It's unusual for them to survive that sort of a journey. They are not lethal but they do have a nasty bite."
A Tesco spokesman said: "This was a very unusual and rare occurrence."
