Forum: Nuclear - the way ahead?

DEBATE: Is nuclear power the best potion for the future?

A MAJOR environmental debate exploring the UK’s future energy needs will take place in the city next week.

The second M.E.N. forum entitled ‘Nuclear – the way ahead?’ will be held at Urbis on Tuesday, June 17 at 4pm.

Expert speakers will include Professor Richard Clegg from Manchester University’s Dalton Nuclear Institute and Adrian Bull, UK stakeholder relations manager for north west nuclear company Westinghouse.

The panel will also include Professor Erik Bichard, an expert in sustainability based at Salford University, and Steve Moore, the Environment Agency’s area manager for the north west.

What amazes me about manchester council that the city is supposed to be totally against anything to do with nuklear power tect (nuke free city) and yet its having a debate that nuke is the way foreward? double standards or what .

I take issue with comments by Coun Bill Risby. As reported in the MEN, Coun Risby's comments comes over as if he is speaking on behalf of all his constituents and the people of this country when he voices against nuclear power. Everyone has a right to their opinions, but they should be clear that they are making their own opinions and not that of the puplic.
Another fact is that we are not creating weapons when we generate nuclear power, weapons would only be produced if we wanted to. I could suggest many other dangerous situations i.e. fully loaded petrol tankers are potential bombs for terrorists, but no-one objects to those.
The nuclear industry is very safe, both from accidents as well as terrorisum, and all sites are very well protected.
With reference to Prof Erik Bichard's comments, may I ask how he proposes to generate power from wind and wave when conditions are flat calm, or a raging gale when these would have to be turned off, not a very areliable form of power generation for the country.
As for costs, I understand that wind farms could cost more than nuclear reactors, and they are also a blot on the landscape.
Indeed our coatline is becoming even more cluttered by the week.
