MYRA Hindley's evil is legendary - but today she is unveiled as a self-obsessed, self-pitying egotist.
Secret documents have been made public relating to the Moors Murderer's time in prison.
They give a dramatic new insight into the killer's mind and include letters she wrote, her personal papers and Home Office correspondence relating to her years behind bars.
And they reveal that despite the unbearable anguish she inflicted on them her evil never managed to tarnish the dignity of her victims' families.
Among the 593 files stored at the National Archives in Kew are heart-rending handwritten letters from Winnie Johnson and Ann West.
Mrs Johnson's 12-year-old son Keith Bennett was murdered by Hindley and Ian Brady after being snatched while he walked to his grandma's house. He was buried on Saddleworth Moor in a shallow grave.
Mrs Johnson's letter was said to have reduced the `usually controlled' Hindley to tears.
She had contacted Hindley in prison 20 years after Keith's disappearance in 1964 and wrote: "As a woman I am sure you can envisage the nightmare I have lived with day and night, 24 hours a day. Not knowing whether my son is alive or dead, whether he ran away or was taken away is literally a living hell, something which you no doubt have experienced during your many years locked in prison."
She describes how it has taken five weeks to write the letter `because it is so important' and that she writes out of `desperation' and `faint hope' that Hindley will help her find out what happened to her son.
Dignified
"My heart tells me you know and I am on bended knees begging you to end this torture and finally put my mind at rest."
The tone of the letter is dignified and ends: "Please Miss Hindley help me."
A memo from staff at Cookham Wood Prison in Rochester, Kent, described Hindley's reaction to the letter. It said: "She became extremely upset and tearful whilst reading it and it took a very long time for her to compose herself sufficiently to talk (this is most unusual as Myra is normally very controlled)."
Hindley denied all knowledge of Keith's death when she first read the letter, according to the memo - which also referred to Hindley's dilemma about how to respond because of fears of newspapers publishing her reply or being seen as callous if she did not reply.
The memo, addressed to a Miss Wallace in P4 Division, Cleland House, and dated November 3, 1986, said Hindley's exact words on reading the letter were: "I wish I did know something - I could at least then put the poor woman out of her misery."
She later confessed to Keith's murder. A letter from Mrs West, mother of Lesley Ann Downey, is also revealed in the files. It is written to the then Home Secretary Robert Carr, and makes a moving plea for Hindley to be kept behind bars. The three- page letter, dated September 13, 1972, also protests at Hindley being let out for walks in the park.
"You must think I am very bitter and I am and there must be hundreds of people that feel the way I do about this.
"If it was me, I would feel safer where I was. Please help me as a mother who has suffered more than anyone knows to lose a little girl in such a cold blooded murder."
The letter is signed: "Thanking you, Mrs A West, mother of Lesley Ann Downey."
Hindley and Brady were jailed for life at Chester Assizes in May 1966 for the murders of Lesley and Edward Evans, 17. Brady was also convicted of murdering John Kilbride, 12, with Hindley as an accessory. In 1987 - after Mrs Johnson sent her plea - Hindley and Brady confessed to killing Keith Bennett and Pauline Reade, aged 16. Police searches of the location provided by Brady and Hindley led to the discovery of Pauline Reade's body - but Keith's body was never found.
What do you think? Have your say.

I personally feel that if we had the death sentence back it would still not be good enough for the mob.

Such a grim time for everyone concerned.

Give your head a shake! Why would anyone - let alone a Home Secretary - release Hindley or Brady... they wouldn't, not alive, anyway.
Where do conspiracy theorists get their daft ideas from?
Maybe Hindley is shacked up with Hitler or Lord Lucan, dining on Shergar steak butties.

Oh, tut...what a pity you could not have spent time with poor Myra, she would have loved your company, just the right kind of liberal attitude for her to feast on, such a refreshing change from crusty old Longfords grisly face, he was not much fun for her.. no game..way too easy, very boring for her..tut aw.. I doubt you would have proved an equal competitor for her, not that she was clever in any way at all, just that her visitors and supporters lacked any insight/intelligence or sympathy for her victims, She would have tired of you as soon as your uselessness became apparent, but a new sympathetic face would have been a nice little distraction for her.
You got kids Mike?, or are you too busy sympathizing with the Myra`s of the world?, maybe your salary depends on it?..If you do have kiddies, innocents, then read the details of the callous treatment she SO ENJOYED inflicting on other folks CHILDREN , Not at the time, or any time after did she feel remorse, guilt, or suffer any conscience about her vile deeds, then imagine it to be your babies/children...can you do that???, no?.. There is one mother left, as far as we know, who still waits for her young, innocent son`s return because your Myra could not remember where he was frog marched to his death, after hours of suffering horrifically at their hands.., you see she was not interested, he had served his purpose..( see a pattern here?).
Had the "mob" outside that court, and indeed some of the policemen that cried whilst listening to the tapes, all those years ago, known she was to be treated so very well, they would have ripped that van apart and its contents, and I would have loved to be amongst the crowd.
I am sure all the murderous scum, including Brady applaud you..Mike, Manchester.., But the real, honest people of the area are sick to death of the attitude like yours.

isn´t the same. Them and us. We are kept firmly in our places, they do as they wish. You´ll find out if you ever dare challenge it, or the wrong person. Most people will never witness it in a lifetime, but it exists. Myra Hindley is beyond Elvis or Shergar jokes, she was a very serious political pawn. And my bet is she´s playing bingo somewhere on the Costa´s.

and before you ask i think hindley got what she deserved - a life time rotting in her cell and then a death behind bars.

Why on earth would anyone sanction letting her go (Home Ssecretary etc), opening themselves to potential criminal charges or worse – public humiliation and ridicule?

(Grief Tourist, Tameside) please look in a dictionary. [Cambridge Dictionary – Online] “ordinary” - not different or special or unexpected in any way; usual:
If you would characterise the actions of Hindley or to a lesser degree Maxine Carr as “usual” you need to see a doctor. Trust me.
There’s an old Jewish saying “If 3 people tell you your ill, go and see a doctor”. I suspect 2 more people will tell you shortly.

Odysseus, who used the word conpiracy? Why would it have been conpiratorial to release Hindley? Perhaps she was rehabilitated by our good men and ladies in the prison service and allowed to set foot back into the domain of the land reserved for those who are safe to be free - many that roam that earth however are definitely not. Hence the virtual daily reports of almost daily murders there in the UK. Hindley would not pose / have posed any further threat to society if she indeed didn´t die, it´s just that there are those who cannot see that. The mob mentality of the society we live in for one. I don´t like Hindley, but she´s not as bad, or perhaps was not as bad as some. Now I´m really dodging the bullets. It´s possible she was freed because the authorities thought she had served her time, and this was done quietly because of the threats made against her, and the public outcry. She could also be dead,
it´s just there doesn´t seem a lot of evidence to support that.

Brady and Hindley were just(!!!) a pair of evil paedophiles and sadists that fate just happened to throw together.
No one (in their right mind) could believe that either of this evil spawn, would be allowed to return to wider society, and it beggars believe that you think such an action could happen.
Crime-free Didsbury? I wish.
For the record, are some of the posters on here too dim to realise that 'Laura Norder (think about it - duh!) is not a real name?
I despair.

Evil beyond comprahension.
Should they have been/be released?? What a stupid question!!
The Cocteau Twins (11/06/2008 at 21:50)
Remember Maxine Carr was guilty of perjury and perverting the course of justice lying for Ian Huntley
as apposed to Hindley who actually groomed some/all of the children on behalf of Ian Brady....Hindley was also convicted of murdering Edward Evans and Lesley Ann Downey and received two life sentences. She further received a concurrent seven-year sentence for being an accessory in the John Kilbride murder.
Always wondered why the even madder hatter Lord Longford tried to appeal Hindley's life sentence on the basis - that she was being kept in prison even though she was a changed woman who was no longer a threat?????
Bet there are nuttier punters here, who agree......
Anyone who thinks Brady or Hindley should be or to have been released, should be made to listen to the tape recordings these monsters (beyond rehabilitation, yes beyond) took of those innocent children (R.I.P) God Rest,,,,, and God Bless....
