The footwear, known as FitFlops, has the backing of academics at Salford University after they carried out tests on the effect of the sandals.
The FitFlops' sole acts like a `wobble board', which requires more effort to stabilise the body during walking.
The FitFlops are now being mass produced and Phil Graham-Smith from the university said: "We found calf and hip muscles were being activated for longer when wearing the FitFlops, which is like giving those areas of your legs a targeted workout."
Wearers are already reporting that the shoes are helping to alleviate conditions, such as lower back pain and arthritis.
Dr Graham-Smith said: "Potentially this could be a miracle shoe. It's not often that you get a product that can aid performance and help to reduce pain at the same time. We are very excited."
