THERE are no giant screens showing back-to-back football matches at the Blue Bell Inn.

In fact, there are no TVs at all. There is no juke box, pool table or darts and definitely no lager louts, swearing, fighting or drugs.

Instead, the traditional local in Levenshulme specialises in relaxation, conversation, cheap beer, good food and community spirit.

And this has helped the Blue Bell to become overall winner in the Manchester Best Bar None Awards which aim to recognise premises that provide a safe and enjoyable environment, discourage binge drinking and prevent alcohol-related crime.

Owned by independent brewery Sam Smith's, the pub in Barlow Road does all of this and more - with licensees Mark and Mary Dunn determined to ensure it serves the community.

"Marvellous people"

Mark, 46, said: "There are marvellous people here in Levenshulme and Manchester in general and this award is for them really.

"We are very responsible. We'll refuse to serve people alcohol if we think someone's had too much and look after people's car keys if they're over the limit.

"There's no swearing in the lounge or parlour, no TVs or music, and we don't allow bad behaviour.

"We want a tidy, well managed business."

Dad-of-four Mark admits the pub was `vile' when he arrived two years ago from the Spinners Arms in Oldham. But after a major refurbishment its reputation has been restored.

"Campaign"

Mark said: "We're very involved in the community now. We supported the campaign to save Green Bank Fields, the last bit of green space around here, from the developers. We have a quiz and a three-course meal for pensioners for a fiver on Tuesdays and a Christmas party for the over 60s.

"It's all about being a proper family pub."

Bitter starts at £1.34 a pint, lager £1.59 and there is a full menu of traditional pub grub and a popular Sunday lunch. Four-hundred people attended the Best Bar None Awards at Manchester's Hilton Hotel hosted by comedian and DJ Justin Moorhouse.

Varsity won the best bar category. Queer was named the best lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender venue and Tiger Tiger the best club.

In all, 48 venues met the required standard.
