A SKY-diving great grandmother with purple hair has been sworn in as Manchester's new Lord Mayor.
Mavis Smitheman has lived in Newton Heath most of her life. The mother-of-three has 10 grandchildren, three great grandchildren and is a regular at the gym.
But the self-confessed thrill seeker former sky-diver says she now prefers to spend her time curled up with a good book.
Mavis represented Ardwick Ward for Labour for four years and has also served as chief whip.
She has promised to campaign for older people.
She said: "It is important that they are recognised and valued for their tremendous contribution to society.
"I'm passionate that they feel safe and secure within local communities and their own environment.
"I am in the fortunate position of being able to represent and give a voice to older people in Manchester and will work hard to ensure their needs are recognised and met."
She also paid tribute to her own family. She said: "I am blessed with a wonderful family. They are certainly an inspiration when it comes to working for a positive difference within the city."
She will be assisted by lifelong friend Irene Etchells who becomes Lady Mayoress.
Irene, a dental nurse, has worked with disabled people and with the Princess Royal Trust for Carers.

This is the way forward, getting people from all backgrounds involved with decision making. This will bring more people out to vote and abolish the current 35% turn out. The current politicians only appeal to a certain section of society, thus we have 35% of the population deciding our future (which is the wealthy in case you havn't guessed)

If Councillor Smitheman had safety pins through her cheeks, sporting the V sign, then I might err on the prejudiced side and tend not to support her as a civic leader. But her record speaks for itself.
