Apprentices' electric speed machine

New green racing car from Bentley.
APPRENTICES at north west luxury car manufacturer Bentley have strengthened the company's environmental credentials by developing a `green' racing car.

The nine youngsters based at the firm's factory in Crewe designed and built the electric-powered car for the Greenpower Corporate Challenge. The event was held at the Goodwood racetrack in Sussex and the apprentices plan to enter the car in a full season of racing after it successfully completed the four-hour race.

The car, which has been named the Continental DC, runs off a 24-volt motor supplied by two 12-volt rechargeable batteries. It has a top speed of 40 mph and has zero carbon emissions.

The group won a `Spirit of Greenpower' award for their team spirit.
