POLICE are investigating an accident in which a young man was killed, on the M60 last night.
The clockwise carriageway of the motorway was closed at junction 16, after the victim was seen in the roadway.
Accident investigation teams were at the scene, and officers were trying to establish whether the man had wandered on to the motorway, or had been in a vehicle.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: "It was utter chaos. The motorway was very busy anyway with it being a Bank Holiday weekend, and there would certainly have been long tailbacks, as traffic built up behind the accident scene."
He said: "We believe the man was a pedestrian, who had probably been hit by at least one vehicle. He was taken by ambulance to Fairfield Hospital in Bury, and pronounced dead on arrival."
Police last night had not been unable to identify the dead man, but described him as being young.
