A POLICEMAN demoted for racist and sexist comments also said people from one town were 'backward'.
The sergeant, who worked in Wigan, has been reduced in rank to a constable - a drop in salary from about £40,000 a year to £29,000.
Greater Manchester Police is refusing to say exactly what he said but the M.E.N. understands that the officer made derogatory comments about people from Westhoughton - a small semi-rural town in the neighbouring police division of Bolton.
The town, with a population of about 23,000, is mainly residential. It is a mix of council estates and several new housing developments. A police disciplinary hearing panel ruled what the officer said had breached the police code of conduct on politeness and tolerance.
He denied making racist comments but admitted using sexist language.
The hearing followed an Independent Police Complaints Commission-managed investigation launched in June last year after complaints by fellow officers.
Remarks
He made the remarks during a conversation with them.
The decision to demote the officer was today welcomed by a police union boss.
Chris Burrows, chairman of the Greater Manchester branch of the
Police Federation
, said: "It is something we will not tolerate and it is important to highlight that it was his colleagues who brought it to the attention of management and had it not been for that it would have gone unnoticed.
"I would like to stress that this happened inside a police station and there were no members of the public involved."
IPCC commissioner Ms Naseem Malik said: "The comments made by this officer were of a racist and sexist nature.
"His actions have brought disgrace upon himself and GMP and it is entirely appropriate that he has been removed from a supervisory role."

Why is it though, that everytime someone stands up against racism, sexism etc that they get accused of being pc?Would some people prefer our public bodies to show outright prejudice?
People have been challenging discrimination for decades, centuries even, well before this stupid term pc,replaced the real word..."decency".If William Wilberforce,or Emily Pankhurst were about today, they'd get dismissed as pc. You can't say anything remotely fair these days, without someone lazily, and inaccurately using the term.

Why was it that a asian policeman had a accident and left the scene of a accident and repainted his car and tried to get his girlfreind to lie for him and drove without insurance .so that in my books is peverting the course of justice as well as a lot of other laws. And he was fined a few weeks pay and allowed to continue working in the police? Call me stupid but surely these crimes are more serious than this officers crimes and he lost his pension and his job???Its time to re-evaluate how we treat all our police officers.i really hope that this is printed.

People in Ashton joke about Mossley, Bury folk joke about Radcliffe people, the Brits tell Irish Jokes, Australians take the mick out of Tasmanian Islanders.
Is this just not one of those things that have been going on since time began - joking about the residents of the next village!

You do realise that you are now going to have BF & CoC saying this story is nothing to do with racism and you are a bad person for mentioning it?

This officer in my opinion would be better getting transferred from his station because his colleges certainly don’t like him I wouldn‘t trust any of them on a call.
Being Politically Correct can be taken to far.

Can somebody tell me, without the usual rhetoric, just why an officer who 3 years later commits BOTH sexist and racist offences is not treated with the parity of his ex colleagues? Was their sanction of ’dismissal’ too severe or is this just another example of the ’rules for one type of police officer and rules for the other’ ? While I accept that every case has mitigation, the difference between the sanctions and the usual ’Soundbites’ rolled out from both the Force Command and Police Federation alike have very subtle nuances between now and 3 year ago. So much so that a senior officer states:
"He has been given a significant sanction and moved from the area he was previously policing. He now has the opportunity to address his actions and prove to the community and his colleagues that he is worthy to be an officer within Greater Manchester Police."
Why were the Police Constables not given this same chance? Surely not because there was no room for demotional manoeuvrability?
Greater Manchester Police is a misnomer. There is nothing great about its policies and how it reinforces them. I am not a police officer - I’m allowed to think for myself. To those officers who choose to work in an organisation like this are just as guilty. Next time it may be one of them.
And no, I wasn’t one of the four.
Are GMP now saying that an officer MAY not be dismissed for racist behaviour, because that is what it looks like, and if so will the four PC's have any chance of being reinstated if this is applied retrospectively? Will Mr Todd's original sanction be considered too harsh given that his decision making process was flawed or at the very least could now be considered suspect. I don't know? What I do know is that this whole thing stinks. Those aware of the circumstances of both situations should hang their heads in shame.
