The newspaper beat off competition from the Lancashire Evening Post and Liverpool Daily Post to take the prestigious prize at a ceremony attended by 550 media industry professionals at Manchester United's ground, Old Trafford.
Judges noted how the M.E.N. was the "biggest regional daily newspaper in the country" and praised the fact that the M.E.N. newsroom is "arguably the most convergent regional newsroom in the country", utilising the skills of traditional print journalists alongside staff from the city TV station, Channel M, and the north west radio stations Smooth Radio and Century Radio.
The Manchester Evening News's sister title, the Stockport Express, which is also part of the Guardian Media Group's M.E.N. Media division, picked up the prize for weekly newspaper of the year.
How-Do is a media industry website serving the north west.

M.E.N named daily paper of the year
To not listen to the people, and help AGMA/Gmpta/Gmpte/Mcc force the C-Charge on Greater Manchester.
The opposition must have been dire...
Leo B: You think the newspaper is rubbish but still log on to it's website 7 days a week to post comments. Why don't you take your trade elsewhere then. Would be like me saying I think bmw's are rubbish but still drive mine every day.
As the Daily Mail pointed out, the paper that failed to expose Michael Todd's scandalous affairs - on its own doorstep!!
Or as with Prince Harry, did the editor hold the information back??
Unlike the nationals, no rivals or local competition actually! But the paper still needs to employ more local journalists and focus on investment not cost cutting as the way ahead!! (I only want the MEN to be better!)
Well done the MEN now all you need to do is fire those bloody people who censor everything that i try and get into print on your postbag etc... well done to you all.
Beer baron: if it's a choice between the rotten BMW or walking, which are you going to do? I don't always like the way the MEN reports - or doesn't report (eg Todd) - the news; but I'm damn' well going to have my say regardless! (I only post five days a week, by the way - from my desk at work!)
Leo B: Firstly whilst at work you should be working, not surfing the internet, and secondly of course i'd take the BMW every time - wouldn't have bought it if I intended to walk everywhere.
Beer Baron, how do you know what I should or shouldn't be doing at work?
I like the MEN in general, but i find it strange that it often lands on my doormat before 9am! Maybe it should be renamed the Manchester Morning News?
I suspect the Judges panel was made up of Richard Leese, Roger Jones and Gordon Brown.
What a great paper.i love this banter that everybody has in this newspaper it gives people a place to voice their opinion right/or wrong its just a great soap box.
It used to be more upmarket and respected. You were reminded of this by the reprint of the Munich air disaster which came with the paper MEN. It was a broadsheet and the title of the paper was in gothic script so had a classy appearance not like the bland front cover now. The headline stories are also very often just some silly local trivia, so I'd prefer more national news on the front. Still I look forward to reading it each evening when I get in, just ignoring the front cover.
Only if you can get past the hypersensitive censor Ace.
