POLICE chiefs will lead the salute to Chief Constable Michael Todd at a memorial service at Manchester Cathedral tomorrow.

Tributes will be paid by Acting Chief Constable Dave Whatton, Coun Paul Murphy, chairman of the Greater Manchester Police Authority, and Chief Constable Ken Jones, president of the Chief Police Officers' Association.

The service, which starts at 11am, will include a reading of the Police Prayer.

As leaders of different faiths light candles in memory of Mr Todd, the police band will play Nimrod, from Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations.

A Bible reading will be given by Lord Lieutenant for Greater Manchester, Warren Smith, who will represent the Queen.

The service, which is due to last about an hour, will be led by the Dean of Manchester, the Very Rev Rogers Govender.

He will invite an expected congregation of about 1,000 to give thanks for the career of Mr Todd, who was found dead on a Welsh mountain last month.

The Dean will ask those attending to pray for Mr Todd's widow Carolyn and their children Catherine, 16, and twins Matthew and David, 13, who will attend along with Mr Todd's brother Stephen.

The Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Rev Nigel McCulloch, will say the opening prayer.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith will be there, as well as some of Britain's most senior police officers.

The leaders and mayors of all 10 local authorities in Greater Manchester will also attend.

Entry will be by invitation only, but members of the public can see it live on Channel M.
