Grace, 24, the daughter of film director Danny Boyle, turned to her dad to help her send unwanted school text books to Tanzania.
She planned to launch a £10,000 fund-raising drive at a gig by Manchester band I Am Kloot.
Her father Danny - whose film credits include the 1996 movie Trainspotting - used a track by I Am Kloot in his 2007 film Sunshine and put the fund-raisers in touch with the band.
They gave the go-ahead and Grace and her friends will now collect money at the concert at Manchester Academy on May 3.
Grace, who is studying chemistry at Manchester University, said: "We need to cover the transport, which costs 50p per book.
"We were thinking about cake sales but you need to sell a lot of cakes to get to £10,000. This will make a real difference."
School text books are changed regularly in Britain but are still useful to schools in Tanzania.
