A MAJOR road has been closed and several houses evacuated after a fire started at an industrial unit in Clayton.
Just after 6am this morning, police were called to the blaze, which is now thought to have started in a private garage in Ashton New Road, rather than at Advanced Claddings and Insulation off Stokes Street as previously thought.
A 200 metre exclusion zone extends along Ashton New Road at its junction with Schofield Street to its junction with Edge Lane.
Traffic is being diverted away from the area, and motorists should avoid it wherever possible.
Fire crews and police officers are at the scene, and the residents of a row of nearby houses have been evacuated as a safety precaution.
It is believed the building could contain cylinders of oxyacetylene.
Any buildings, such as schools, within the exclusion zone are likely to be affected.
Seymour Road Primary School has already been closed. People are advised to call and check before travelling to the area.
Several more houses are in the process of being evacuated as a precautionary measure. Those affected are being taken to a local community centre while the area is made safe.
The cause of the fire is not yet known. This will be investigated once the building is safe.

There is no such thing as "cylinders of oxyacetylene"
Oxygen and Acetylene are in different cylinders, Oxygen - which on it's own is not flamable. The other which is desolved Acetylene which is the dangerous one.
Thanks for that <yawn>.
Acetylene is a dangerous fuelgas which detonates and or explodes violently when cylinders become heated or if there is a flashback into equipment and cylinders during welding cutting gouging and heating processes, oxygen only helps burning in oxyacetylene and oxypropane and oxyhydrogen processes but on it's own does nothing.
