A MAN was left with severe facial injuries after a burglar attacked him with a cricket bat in his own home.

The 59-year-old awoke to find the thug standing in his bedroom. The intruder then beat him about the head with the bat.

The man, who has not been named, managed to stagger from his home in Kingfisher Close, to a police station.

He was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery, but remains in a `poorly' condition.

Det Chief Insp Jeff Arnold said: "This appears to be a violent and completely motiveless attack. I am appealing to anyone that may have heard a disturbance, or who has seen a man walking around with a cricket bat, to come forward."
