THE minute's silence in honour of the Munich tragedy was impeccably observed inside Old Trafford today ahead of the Manchester derby.

There had been fears that City fans would disrupt the tribute, which was to honour the 23 who died just over 50 years ago, including the Busby Babes and former City player Frank Swift.

However, the silence was respected by fans inside the ground, with a series a bangs outside the ground the only noise to be heard. Police outside the ground believe these could have been fireworks.

As a MUFC fan, thanks to all the MCFC fans who were fantastic observing the minute's silence and holding up their scarves. It was quite emotional to watch and good for the fans who didn't rise to the media speculation that some would cause disruption.

Are the fireworks the work of City fans then?.....I am sure they must be, you had been hoping that we did something like cough so that you can slate City in the media....WE CITY FANS were silent in tribute to Frank Swift amongst others....RIP Frank, you are gone but never forgotten.

Thank you City fans from a red - that says something to the rest of the world about Manchester people - and the firework bangs sounded like gun salutes to the victims.

Thank you ALL Manchester fans for a very emotional start to the game. I am a city fan and proud of it.

I thought the bands were a salute to the 8 United players who died.

i am blackburn born and have taken manchester as my adopted home. today in the most made me so very proud to live here. well done to all the city fans who kept silent. hope the people who let off the fire works are named and shamed

i hope the blues who let the fire works off outside ,,,did not get away with it...the blues in the ground paid there respect ..but the fireworks as ruined it,,,,rivals for life i guess,,,

Why would City fans ever disrespect a minutes silence???

The best fans in the world do not do stupid s*** like that....only United, Liverpool and Leeds fans do that kind of thing!

Yes it was good to see, thank you City fans for not rising to the bait of the press. Can i just say also that i was even more impressed by the Man Ure fans, 94 minutes silence is very hard to do but you achieved it with extreme diligence.

I'm a proud City fan today

I was the biggest critic of the match timing as it was the closest to the disaster

Its been a very emotional afternoon , makes you realise that the chants of fans in the past are from the ignorant, we all now realise what a massive tragedy for football it was, not just a tragedy for United

I feel like the whole nation where losers in this now, not just a select, red, few

Here's to the Men we all lost that day.............

I've got to agree with Asdablue, I thought the "bangs" were for the 8 busby babes who die. I'm not sure but wasn't there 8 bangs? I've recorded the whole thing on Sky+ so I can watch it again and check the number of bangs.

Good to see that City supporters honoured the minute's silence; but I think united fans went a bit overboard; didn't anyone tell them that it was only a minute and not ninety minutes silence ? Theatre of Dreams ? Ha ha, don't make me laugh, more like library of dreams He he he ! On a serious note, City really have to stop giving late goals away it makes these 2nd rate teams look competetive. Roar on Arsenal !
