THE startling effects of climate change on a glacier have been revealed by a 34-year Salford University study.
Professor David Collins first monitored the glacier near Zermatt in the Swiss Alps as a 24-year-old post graduate student.
He has returned each year with students to take measurements from the river flow at Gornergletscher, 2,600 metres high.
The research has revealed that a lack of winter snow and warming air temperatures are causing glaciers to melt at an alarming rate - with some smaller ones likely to disappear in the next decade.
Professor Collins said: "The result of these changes to our eco-system will simply be disastrous."
The project has the longest, most continuous and most detailed records of melt water discharge and glacier river water quality in the world.
Over the years, about 500 students have taken measurements from equipment valued at £100,000 from late May to the end of September.
During the day temperatures can rise to 28C, but at night it can plunge below zero.
The nearest supplies are a one-and-a-half hour walk down the mountain with the return journey taking up to three-and-a-half hours.
Professor Collins said: "When these glaciers disappear completely there will be no melt water at all. River flow will be greatly decreased and will have changed nutrient characteristics."
He feared the Alpine eco-system would be changed forever.
The increased sediment in the river will also affect filters at nearby hydroelectric stations.
What do you think? Have your say.

1) Climate change IS happening.
2) Climate change IS caused by humans (at least partly if not in whole)
3) There is no way of turning it back.
We can go on and on about polluting cars and dirty industry, BUT do the rest of the world care? Nope, the Indians all just want to get their hands on one of those Tata cars. And that means another 100 million cars on the road. And how many cars UK have? 33 million.
UK could be stuffed with all the new EU regulations about CO2, and it would make a difference. In the end, it is the people suffering from such useless regulations, paying tax and fines to the EU. And just watch UK industries such as steel collapse and move to India.

So if the MEN say tomorrow that the moon is made of cheese would you believe it or do a bit of research yourself?
For those that believe everything that comes from certain quarters that says 'this is real & humanity's fault' - follow the funding money to see who pays their bills!

I remeber the 50s and society were more worried about Korea, Suez and rock and roll. Winters were terrible and extremely
cold, if anything people were talking about another mini-ice age, there wasn't talk of abusing the planet in them days everything was took for granted. You say things like this would happen, climate change and global warming wasn't even thought of back then, the clean air act came about and it was exactly that no mention of saving the planet in them days.
Yes we have got climate change amd no amount of extra taxes will solve it there is China with 2.5 billion people who will probably all want cars and the mod cons we have, how are you going to stop it? Certainly not with higher taxes but us mugs will go on paying and some will go on believing the propaganda the government puts out about saving the planet with the extra tax. It is all a con by governments to get more of your money, the world cannot be saved sadly.

I watched a professor of climatology? a few months ago and watched him back in 1959 when he made a TV program of how our weather was changing and if we didnt stop burning coal etc we would be heading towards of the point of no return ? He predicted the ice caps would start to melt and water levels would rise. and that was back in 1959??
