Man hit by car on motorway

A MAN who walked onto a motorway and tried to dodge traffic in the fast lane escaped with just a broken leg after he was hit by a car.

The 31-year-old man - believed to be heavily intoxicated - was spotted by motorists walking in the fast lane of the M61 at Horwich, Bolton, at 7.15pm last night.

He was struck by a blue VW Golf on the southbound carriage of the M61, between the Bolton West Services and junction six, Horwich. Police attended and the man was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital with a broken left leg. A spokesman said he was in a stable condition today.

The motorist was treated at the scene for shock. Police said the fast lane of the north and southbound carriageways were closed for more than an hour.

What about the poor driver that hit him? I do so hope this drunken idiot is prosecuted and that the driver suitably compensated. Does he realise how lucky he is I wonder ?

I just feel sorry for the driver in this case, obviously he will be traumatised and could need counselling I wish him well.As for the foolish man who walked on to the motorway in a drunken condition I'm sure by now he is feeling not embarrassed but shame although he may well have been in a situation where he had diminished responsibilty so people do have to be aware of that too.

i agree the trauma that the motorist will have to face now is unfair. i hope he also gets prosicuted for walking in any state on the motorway

Due to other incidents on a short stretch of this motorway, there have been calls for a lighting to be put in place to make it safer for pedestrians!!! (I jest ye not.)

Yet another IDIOT trespassing on a motorway (how idiotic is that?), and no doubt the other idiots and whingers will increase their calls for lighting on the motorway.

The numptys are taking over. Prosecute this fool for trespassing, and wilfully endangering the safety of legitimite road users.

Sympathy should go to the poor driver.

One reason why cars can travel so fast on motorways is there are no pedestrians about to do stupid things like walk in front of cars

the way the law is in this country the police will probabily try to prosecute the driver as well

last thing you expect on the motorway is someone trying to cross it

There have been others recently.

Apparently, the Coroner has called for to be put on the motorway.

Won't this just encourage more of these morons to try and cross? The motorway is NOT for pedestrians. Lights are unnecessary.

Firstly, if I were to hit a pedestrian while travelling at 70mph, I would NOT want to see him.

Secondly, if I COULD see him, I might be inclined to swerve and injure myself in the process. I'd rather hit him than risk my own life.

Lighting on motorways for pedestrians is not foolish. A pedestrian is a person who is walking. This could mean someone who has broken down and walking to one of the emergency telephones. Unusual in this day and age of the mobile but is possible. I agree this man should be prosecuted and made to compensate the driver.
