Beth Deakins, described by her parents as being happy and healthy, went to the cinema and for a meal with her auntie and cousin the day before she complained of feeling unwell.
She went back to her auntie's house the following day and Beth, from Gorton, Manchester, suffered a serious asthma attack and was rushed by ambulance to Manchester Royal Infirmary, where she later died.
Although diagnosed with asthma at the age of eight, she led a happy and healthy life, using an inhaler to control the condition. She had never been hospitalised because of her asthma.
Her parents Natalie and Andy and brothers Anthony, 17, Thomas, 16 and Jay, 14, have been left devastated by her death.
The family said: "Beth will be so deeply missed by all her family and friends. She touched everyone who knew her with her happy and fun ways.
"Beth had asthma but never let it stop her from doing what she enjoyed most, staying over at her friends and planning what they'd be doing the next week.
"Beth never liked having to go shopping but if we were in Morrison's supermarket shewould always make us feel guilty until we put a donation in the asthma charity box."
Her condition had been reviewed by doctors and she always appeared fine. The family said the death was totally unexpected.
Beth, a pupil at Wright Robinson High, Gorton, had spoken about being a Spanish teacher when she left. Her family were planning her first trip to Spain later this year.
She enjoyed swimming, dancing and horse riding.
Her auntie, Jackie Todd, said: "I used to call her Bolshy Beth because she was loud and funny and had a great sense of humour. What has happened just does not seem real. She had been at my house and seemed fine. She was a bit wheezy but she kept saying she was ok. No-one expected anything like this to happen."
Beth's grandmother Diane Little said: "It is very hard to deal with at the moment because we were always together.
"Beth always wanted us to donate to Asthma UK whenever we were out shopping. We are asking people to send donations to Asthma UK and we will be collecting at the funeral as well."
"Beth's funeral was taking place later today.
