The 27-year-old is already a European champion and is now aiming to share glory with the British team at the four-yearly Ultimate Frisbee World Championships in Canada this year.
Sam, 27, who is from Edenfield, Lancashire, took up the unusual sport when he went to university.
The former Bury Grammar School pupil became captain of the university team.
Sam said: "Ultimate frisbee is a mixture of American football and netball because you have to catch the frisbee and you can't run with it.
"Originally, I signed up because I thought it would be a laugh but now I take it more seriously rather than just using it for the social side."
Sam is a member of a team called Fusion in Edinburgh, where he lives, and he has taken part in competitions in Britain, Sweden and Italy.
Although it is a non-contact sport, Sam has suffered some nasty injuries while playing, most recently undergoing reconstructive surgery on his shoulder after a fall.
Last year he won a gold medal representing Britain at the European Championships.
Sam said the team stands a good chance at the world championships.
"GB's previous best has been fifth and we're training hard to improve on that." Tweet
