A GROCERY chain has been refused a licence for a new store to sell alcohol in the wake of the Garry Newlove murder.
About 30 residents, police, and councillors made objections before Salford's licensing panel.
The Tesco-owned One Stop Stores had applied for a licence to sell alcohol from 6am to 11pm seven days a week.
But after a two-and-a-half hour hearing, the panel decided the firm should not be allowed to stock alcohol after concerns that it would led to more booze-fuelled teenagers on the streets.
Coun Janice Heywood condemned the application as `unethical' in the wake of the murder of Mr Newlove.
The company has bought the former Global Video store on Cholmondeley Road and told residents in a letter that renovation work will start this week.
The firm is also due to apply for an identical licence for a store on Langworthy Road, Salford.
Coun Heywood said: "The company now has 21 days to appeal and we would hope that if they do the magistrates will take the same responsible stance as the council's licensing panel and refuse permission."
A One Stop spokesman said: "We understand local concerns. However, there will be many who will want to purchase a bottle of wine on their way home for an evening meal."
What do you think? Have your say.

'Total (UK)' to sell alcohol 24 hrs - 7 days wk. our objections are to be heard on Fri 1st Feb at the local council Licensing hearing - so we are hoping that we have the same positive support as you have been given. Well done to all the objectors in Salford. We all have to stand up and be united to help stamp out this crazy alcohol fueled culture especaially when it is going to effect to the youths of the next generation.

If your council is anything like manchesters they will give most corner shops and garages a licence to sell booze? this culture of giving corner shops a licence must stop. its not the large stores that are selling the kids booze its the smaller corner shops and garages.which we have many.TO MANY
