The Tai Wu restaurant in the city centre was visited by council environmental health officers last year after a complaint from a member of the public.
Inspectors found a cockroach infestation on the premises, dirty food equipment, food spilled on the floor and damaged flooring. The restaurant was closed down for two days to be cleaned and repairs made.
They were later fined a total of £3,000 and ordered to pay £4,100 costs after a hearing at Manchester City Magistrates' Court.
Councillor Neil Swannick said: "Manchester City Council is committed to ensuring that businesses operate in a clean and responsible way and we will not tolerate this sort of negligence and disregard for public health.
"The Tai Wu is one of the largest restaurants in the city, serving about 10,000 meals a week, and it is unacceptable that they allowed standards to deteriorate to this level, potentially risking the health of a large number of people.
"Environmental health officers will not hesitate to prosecute any business large or small who put the health of the public at risk." Tweet
