City escapes worst weather

Flooding at Daisy Nook
DESPITE taking a battering from wind and rain over the weekend, GreaterManchester looks to have escaped the worst of the country's severe weather.

These dramatic shots taken at Daisy Nook, near Failsworth, show one example of localised flooding across the region which caused chaos for rush hour traffic Tuesday.

Drivers on Stannybrook Road, struggled to pass through up to 45cm of standing water caused by overflowing drains as the road dips near the River Medlock.

On the motorway network the M60 and M62 were affected by surface water and poor visability. Cheshire and Lancashire roads were also badly affected.

No severe weather warnings have been issued for the north west but Wales, the east Midlands, south west England and London and the south east are all bracing themselves for heavy downpours and further flooding.

Severe gales have hit must of the south west and south east England and last night the Environment Agency had issued 63 flood warnings with some areas expecting up to 2.5cm (an inch) of rainfall during today.

The forecasters predict little break from the wet weather for GreaterManchester until the middle of next week with temperatures ranging from freezing to 7C.

I hope the poor sod in picture 2 wasn't taking their test?

And the laugh is that we have just had months of roadworks in Daisy Nook ... to stop flooding! It was worse on Tuesday than I have ever seen it. Well done the council, engineers and contractors, you did a great job. The road is next to the river, surface water used to flow directly into the river but I gather now, due to environmental issues, it has to be directed into the waste water system. Worlds gone mad.
