TORRENTIAL rain brought misery to many of the region's motorists this morning.
The M60 was badly hit, with surface water causing problems between junctions 23 and 24 at Ashton under Lyne and Denton Island.
There were also delays at Junction 22 in Failsworth as drivers struggled to come to terms with the effects of heavy downpours.
In Stockport, Middlesex Road was closed both ways during the rush hour due to collision between a lorry and a motorbike.
Parts of the M6 were closed after a lorry jacknifed.
The vehicle came to rest across all three lanes of the motorway at about 9am near junction 21 at Croft. As a result traffic was diverted onto the M62 and long delays were reported.
Spill
Although the lorry was promptly removed it had spilled diesel onto the road and officers were attempting to make it safe for over an hour.
Severe weather warnings have been issued by the Met Office as the miserable start to the New Year continues.
A spokeswoman said that Greater Manchester could expect the rains to ease off tomorrow.
She added: "They are dying out and there'll just be light rain over the next 24 hours."
Parts of the South east and the west have been placed on flood alert with heavy showers there expected to run into tomorrow.

"TORRENTIAL rain brought misery to many of the region's motorists this morning."
I bet it was a barrel of laughs waiting at the bus stop or walking to work or school though.

One thing I noticed though is cyclists causing long slow tailbacks because they understandably didn't want to go through the huge puddles, so they rode in the middle of the road - the result is easy to imagine in what was already a busy day on the roads.

Take 'normal' cars off the road too and this will also free up space, in fact buses too - let cyclists takeover then it wont matter that they wear no lights at night nor will it matter when they jump red lights because they will only have themselves to run into.
On the subject of 4x4s however, baring in mind that the overall dimemsions of my Jeep include it's width being no wider than a new shape Ford Focus - it is only it's height that makes it 'big'. It is about as long as a Focus Estate and looks small next to a Range Rover- so please tell me what should be classified as 'daft' before you send out misinformed, sweeping generalisations. Thanks
