Vincent Ma, 33, from Warrington, died instantly after falling from the balcony of a 10th floor apartment in London's Docklands during a viewing with an estate agent.
He had held a successful £150,000 job as a creative director with a City firm.
The tragedy happened on Tuesday afternoon at the Discovery Dock Apartments East on South Quay Square.
It is understood he made an appointment to view the £800,000 apartment, which were close to his offices, on the previous day. The estate agent carrying out the viewing and guests at a nearby hotel witnessed the tragedy.
His heartbroken parents told how their son had in recent years become been obsessed with his work and avoided contact with them. Police found a note on the business executive's body addressed to his parents.
Father Yiu, 60, an undertaker, said: "He was once a happy boy who had time for everybody.
"After university he moved to London and became increasingly obsessed with money. In 2003 he stopped answering his phone and wasn't speaking to friends. We tried the police and they said he no longer wanted contact with us."
Vincent's mother Kwai Ching, 57, said: "We're heartbroken. He was happy and intelligent but it all seemed to unravel."
A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said the death was not being treated as suspicious.
