THE man pushing to bring congestion charging to Greater Manchester has been named as one of the most powerful figures in the world of transport.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority chairman Roger Jones is the only local authority councillor on a list made up mainly of transport industry bosses.
Top of the list, compiled by influential trade magazine Transit, is Moir Lockhead, chief executive of transport giant First - which runs Greater Manchester's biggest bus company as well as the Trans-Pennine Express railway franchise.
Coun Jones comes in at number 37, ahead of industry giants like millionaire Easyjet founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou, England's Traffic Commissioner Philip Brown and the boss of Britain's biggest train leasing company, Haydn Abbott.
Higher up on the list are Brian Souter - chief executive of Stagecoach, which runs Greater Manchester's second biggest bus company and operates Metrolink for GMPTA, London Mayor Ken Livingstone, Chancellor Alistair Darling, Transport Secretary and Bolton MP Ruth Kelly and junior transport ministers Tom Harris and Rosie Winterton.
Coun Jones may have become the man that anti-charge protesters love to hate, but he won the Outstanding Contribution to Local Transport Award at the National Transport Awards last summer.
GMPTA devotes a lot of time and money to lobbying parliament and is this year running a campaign to improve Greater Manchester's railways.
Coun Jones said of his latest accolade: "It is very flattering, but I think it is all down to our lobbying activities."
Another Greater Manchester man, Paul Bunting, who is chief executive of National Express coaches, also appears on the magazine's `Power 50' list.

So I imagine this will be his first, and last appearance on this list.
Bye bye Jolly Roger!

i.e."the congestion charge"
That's the only thing I know you for and I object to it.
Don't flatter yourself.

No, Mr Jones only wants Joe Public to ditch their cars while he remains comfortably tucked up in his sumptuous limousine, no doubt claiming expenses in the process for the private use of his vehicle. His feeble excuse that HE must get around to meetings etc does not wash – what are the rest of us supposed to do - we all have duties and responsibilities to attend to so what makes him more important. Vote Jones out in May – that will make a difference
