I was stuck on the M61 spur from Bolton for a couple of hours because of this. A journey which normally takes 10 minutes took over an hour.

Why does one accident one on part of the M60 affect so many other routes?

if your journey usually takes 10 mins you probably should be using at bike.

The motorway round there is ridiculous - not the actual route - the idiots that continously block lanes, drive dangerously, cut in, dont indicate, drive too fast or drive too slow and now someone has got on the wrong way? Have these people ever actually learned to drive? Its difficult to drive onto a slip road the wrong way and I live there, I just cannot see how it could have happened! Whoever was responsible - take the license away and make them have proper lessons.

Mr Mann, I assume you are not aware that the M60 is an orbital Motorway in which all surrounding motorways feed into i.e 61, 62, 602, 56, so if an incident occurs those feeder motorways will be affected in someway depending where the incident occurred, in this case junction 9 for the trafford centre would have affected the 602 away from manchester, the 62 west bound and the 61 into manchester as these routes feed onto the anti-clockwise plus it was peak time which didnt help..... doesnt take much to bring the motorways to a stand still!.

Sinnage on the m60 is terrible try navigating onto the m60 at the roundabout in stockport or at the bottom of lancashire hill if you a new visitor in the area?? the designers of these signs need to find another way to direct drivers on and around motorways

Its not that hard if you know which direction you want to travel - North, West, South or East and if you get on the wrong direction you will eventually end up where you want to go!

Chris, I assume the posters 10 minute journey is on a m/way and so you can't take your bike that route.

how could some1 get on the motorway the wrong way, espically at that part as its bad enough to get on the right way let alone the wrong way as i use both jct 9 and 10 on a daily basis

a journey that takes me 10 mins to do took over an hour. i just hope that those who were hurt in this are on the road to recovery and the idiot that caused this gets banned

10 min at 70mph = 11.6 miles.
Using a bike going at 20mph = 34 min

what amazes me is the sheer time it takes the emergency services to move and clear the accident, it takes ages for the pick up truck to get the crashed vehicles moved, and the roads and motorways moving again, long delays then even more accidents as people then rush to get wherever. That area is an accident waiting to happen any day, bad planning, and usual lets build a ski slope and trafford centre with no extra lanes? ban the bad drivers that is the best practice and re test them all.

I have the dubious pleasure of using the M60 everyday, as I commute between Stretford and Bolton. The M60, is without a doubt, the worst road I've ever driven on (Apart from the M25 and M6!).

I hate it and think the world would be a better place without it.

However, I would propose that during peak times, the ENTIRE motorway is reduced to 40 miles an hour to reduce the liklihood of accidents. I would be much happier driving at 40 mph and taking 20 minutes, than driving at 0 mph and taking forever, like it usually does! Not only would it make for a more pleasurable journey, but would eradicate the need for everyone to block the 1st 2 lanes of the motorway by forever gravitating over to the fast lane as they join the carriageway.

The real problem isn't volume of traffic - it's the bad habits used by the vast majority of drivers.

And as for the person who drove the wrong way up the motorway yesterday: Thanks for making me late, and do us a favour...rip up your license!

couple of things, first of all theres no such thing as a "FAST, middle or Slow" lane the National speed limit is 70mph no matter what lane you travel in! which are numbered 1,2,3..... secondly ....right to reply ... Have you stopped to consider why an Accident maybe taking so long? ever thought that it could be a serious incident ( like this one ) where people will be trapped, and seriously or even fatally injured in which case the emergency serices will not rush to get the motorway open just so you can get to work..... " oh this guy is trapped from the waist down, but lets just pull him out and move his car, got to keep the motorway moving"...... oh and if there is a fatality then the motorway will remain closed for longer. I do however agree that the speed limit should be lowered during peak times, but having said that at the end of the day the motorways will keep flowing and there would be less accidents if drivers took proper care and paid attention whilst driving... i.e dont drive up the backside of the vehicle infront etc.... vehicles dont drive by themselves do they?.... dont get me wrong i can sit here and spout off about bad drivers, i admit im no perfect driver im human after all, as is everyone else, but i try my best to be a good a driver as i can be.
