CUSTOMERS are facing a massive increase in fuel bills after energy giant npower announced a 'double-figure' rise in prices. Politicians, clergy, industry watchdogs and charities all condemned the increase.
The cost of electricity from npower will go up by 12.7 per cent and gas will rise by a staggering 17.2 per cent - other suppliers are predicted to follow.
Manchester Central MP Tony Lloyd said he would urge the government to ensure energy firms were not profiteering.
"Any increase in bills is going to have a serious impact on people who are least able to afford to heat their homes," he said. "We simply can't trust energy companies to operate in the public interest.
"We don't want the elderly and vulnerable worried they can't switch on a one-bar heater, while energy supremos hand themselves huge bonuses."
Age Concern says rises of just one per cent result in 40,000 people nationwide struggling to heat their homes.
The M.E.N's Winter Warmer campaign has so far raised more than £15,000 for Age Concern to supply emergency heaters, blankets and flasks.
There were 3,300 needless winter deaths in the north west last year - the highest number in the country. Many could not afford to switch on heaters, or were too frightened of bills to do so.
An Age Concern spokesman said: "Older people living in fuel poverty have to make very difficult choices, often between whether to eat or heat their home."
The Rt Rev Stephen Lowe, the Manchester-based Bishop for Urban Life and Faith, said the government should do more to help the vulnerable meet their heating costs.
Last month, npower increased its online tariff for new customers by 17 per cent and there are fears that today's increases for more than 4 million customers on its standard tariff will be even bigger.
Its move comes on the back of higher wholesale energy bills, lifted by crude oil hitting a record $100 a barrel in New York.
Independent watchdog energywatch condemned the rises. Spokesman Karl Brookes said: "Consumers are always being softened up with talk of `unavoidable' rises. The wholesale price for gas has risen, but all suppliers can decide to absorb more of that. "
The M.E.N's Winter Warmer campaign appeals to readers who may not need their fuel allowance to pass it to the needy.

Or perhaps your greenness is only theoretical - you don't actually like it when it has a real effect on your lives.
No critter worse than a hypercritter!

The only effects that privatisation has are:
1, Massive increases in the prices
2, Redundancies and/or pay cuts amongst the staff
3, Fat profits for shareholders
4, Massive pay increases for fat cat directors
5, Rubbish service for the customers
Labour should have renationalized the lot when they were elected in '97 and not given a bean in compensation to the greedy herberts who bought shares in them. Anyone who bought into the get rich quick schemes under Thatcher deserves all they get
PS Happy new year Bobalesque, I'm still angry!!

Sometimes I wonder which planet the government is on with it's wage settlements at or about the level of inflation when inflation for the lowest paid is much higher due to above inflation rises in Gas, Electricity, Public Transport and Council Tax, all essentials when you don't have much money.
Renationalise gas and electricity now.

The major energy companies buy it off us cheap and sell it back at higher prices, and the government just sits back and rakes in the tax levied on the energy.
Also it does not matter to the rich and politicians as they have so much money they don;t even think about what it costs just to live a normal life, and I do not mean extravigant.
Then it is no wonder that there are so many scroungers milking the benefit system, andyet have a house full of the latest gadgets.

We have had to bottle the fact that train fares are going up more than the rate of inflation and petrol over a pound a litre.
One dealer bought one barrel of oil at over$100 a barrel and then sold it quickly at a loss just so that he could say that he was the first person the buy at over $100 and now it is being quoted that oil is over$100 a barrel.
What do think I'll get if I ask for 17% pay rise?
Does anyone want to organise a riot on the same lines as the French do when they get ripped off?

Having spent a month in Spain I read that the Electricity Company wanted a 15% rise. The Regional Govt told them they could have 5%.
Where's are our Gov't on this.
NPower are rubbish & I will change regardless.
We sold our North Sea Gas cheap instead of conserving it for times like these.

Now I have choice about which energy supplier I use and I chose some time ago to use a supplier that only uses renewables, mostly for environmental reasons, but now I'm seeing some financial benefits too.
As for silly ideas about nationalisation of the telephone network, banks, etc., do you really think your financial affairs would be in any way private if the only person you were legally permitted to bank with were the government? Do you also really think that we would have the broadband internet services we do if there were only one nationalised telephony supplier?
These ideas of mass nationalisation are just nanny-statism taken to its inevitable absurd conclusion.

A price rise as obscene as this also hits a large swathe of society who don't have any access to lump sum winter fuel payments. Neither are they beneficiaries of campaigns for people to donate to.
If through illness or diability you are housebound for most of your time and are not old, you really do have trouble with these obscene increases.
People in employment are out of their homes for the majority of the day and burn far less energy at home. Those who are stuck in all day and night use far more - out of necessity - please note not for basking in warmth for luxury. Many, many illnesses and conditions are greatly exacerbated by cold.
The energy companies incur the wrath of the general public for the bonuses they give to themselves. However, the main reason the price goes up is that they do have to purchase oil which has risen in cost. The solution therefore - in a decent society - is that services vital or important to life, such as Water and Heating, should be excluded from being a profit-making business concern.
Belive me, if they could measure and channel the air that you breathe, you would be paying out for an air tax.
