POLICE in Greater Manchester raided and closed down 351 cannabis farms last year.
The astonishing figures also showed 61 of the drug factories were controlled by either Chinese or Vietnamese defendants.
Officers found the farms - the equivalent to almost one a day - during an operation codenamed Dragonfly, set up to target sites being used for large scale cannabis production.
The figures were disclosed in a short statement from a GMP detective handed to a judge at Manchester Crown Court before he sentenced two `gardeners' arrested after another cannabis factory was found in Burnage.
Mei Yu, 38, and Shi Yao, 22, were due to be paid between £20 and £30 a week to `water' the 319 plants being grown at the house in Glendale Avenue.
But, Judge Robert Atherton was told, they had only been looking after the plants for less than two weeks before they were arrested at the house.
The men, both illegal immigrants from China, were jailed for 12 months after they admitted producing the drug. Judge Atherton said: "Unfortunately, and my impression is reinforced from the information I have been given, the cultivation of cannabis is a common offence.
"Such offences are serious because the use of cannabis is serious. There can be no doubt that cannabis properties are detrimental to the health of users."
Judge Atherton said he accepted Yu and Yao were `to an extent' victims of others who set up cannabis farms and use illegal immigrants to run them.
But he added: "You are mature men who knew you were taking part in criminal activities to the detriment of the citizens of the United Kingdom."
Christopher Beckwith, prosecuting, said the plants were found after police went to the house which had been rented by `a Chinese person' who, it was accepted, was neither of the defendants.

Why downgrade cannabis, then appear to have a 'blitz' on growers? it doesn't make any sense of government poloicies!

Are they to be deported when they have served their sentence?

I suspect these things are targeted by the police because they are easy to deal with and don't involve much work or aggro so it gets the targets up.
Like thinking your football team was playing really well if they had to play rubbish teams every week and won every game 5-0

This isn't the cannabis resin of the 70s that our great and good smoked at University. This is potent skunk which is turning users into useless waste of space zombies incapable of holding down a job.
The cost to society of cannabis is the same as heroin and harder drugs.
Cannabis is a serious "issue" and the Government has played into the hands of the dealers when it downgraded it - the kids think it is legal and harmless now !!!
Lets hope these two "farmers" are sent home after their sentence - somehow I doubt it.

Err...many of the guns on the street are a product of cannabis dealing. The lucrative trade in home grown skunk causes takeover bids and acqusitions amongst the local dealers who settle scores with guns.
Guns aren't just the tools of the heroin and crack trade thesedays!!
Cannabis growing is an organised criminal activity taking place in a house near you - plenty of them catch fire too with overloaded electrics - something to think about if the house next door is one !!
Huge profits are made in renting houses, screwing the elecy meter and growing bud.
As for an easy arrest dealing with a cannabis grower or farmer !!! I am sure the Cops who have to empty the place, arrest someone, complete paperwork, exhibit all the plants and the like would rather deal with a shoplifter.
