THE Tories today gained a political foothold on Manchester council for the first time in a decade after a key Liberal Democrat defected.
Faraz Bhatti, a 34-year-old legal executive, made the shock switch after claiming that the Lib Dems were failing to provide a credible alternative to Labour.
It is the first time the Conservatives have had a councillor in Manchester since Peter Hilton and Paul Cummins lost their seats in Didsbury and Brooklands in 1996.
Party leader David Cameron, who will meet Coun Bhatti, pictured right, during a tour of the region today, told the M.E.N. he was `delighted' at the news. Mr Cameron said: "Faraz is showing that our party is the true home of progressive politics. We stand for extending opportunity and decentralising power to stronger families and a more responsible society and a safer, greener Britain.
"For the first time in 11 years, we now have a Conservative on Manchester city council. I look forward to working with Faraz and our Conservative activists in Manchester to tackle crime and improve the quality of life for people living there." Coun Bhatti said he had been impressed by Mr Cameron's description of himself as a `liberal Conservative'.
He said of his decision to join the Tories: "It has been in my mind for a while. In Manchester the party controlling the council are wasting a lot of tax payers' money. The party of opposition are supposed to be checking up on them and are not doing their job. They [now have] a clear-cut option."
Coun Bhatti, who captured his seat in Whalley Range in 2004, was seen as a Lib Dem rising star.
In 2005 he stood for parliament in Stretford and Urmston, gaining 5,323 votes to finish third behind Labour MP Beverley Hughes and the Tories' Damien Hinds (11,556).
He was re-elected to the Whalley Range ward last summer, with a majority of 612 over Labour's Kath Fry. He serves on the licensing committee and the children and young people scrutiny committee, and his term runs until 2011.
The M.E.N. understands he was persuaded to jump ship by Saj Karim, the Euro-MP who made the Lib Dem-to-Tory switch in November.
That defection was also seen as a major blow for the Lib Dems - not least because Mr Karim was their only Asian parliamentarian.
Mr Karim said today: "This sends a very clear signal that the party is broadening its appeal and allowing people like him to feel comfortable in their natural home."
Coun Bhatti's switch was greeted with fury by the Lib Dems today, who suggested it was tied up with a bitter reselection row in Whalley Range.
Simon Ashley, leader of the opposition on Manchester council, said: "This is absolutely nothing to do with the Tories and everything to do with Faraz's ego. I have never heard him talk about the Conservatives before. He seems upset that I don't consider him the most important person in the world.
"He has shafted his ward colleagues and shafted the party."
Today's news means Labour has 61 seats on the council, the Lib Dems 33, the Conservatives one, and the Green Party one.
The defection came as Mr Cameron was due to give a major speech on health reform today. He was visiting Trafford Hospital - the first to be opened as part of the newly-created NHS in 1948 - to propose fining trusts for every patient who catches a superbug.

At the end of the day, it shouldn't affect Mr Bhatti's vote if he properly represents his constituents, unlike the Labour cronies voting how Labour HQ tells them to (congestion charge etc)...

He must however be forced to resign from the Licencing Commitee or at least a procedural rule invoked so that he cannot attend meetings.
Very sad and very shameful.

about time someone broke ranks in manchester to provide an alternative voice, whether we like his opinions or not.

How anyone can vote Labour after ten years of mutilation to England is beyond me! Have you never read Animal Farm?

This is the reason why people are so fed up with labours attitude towards people you are all so smug in your outlook towards voters and citizens of britain ( Conservative in a by-election in order to be soundly defeated.) You labour politicians are so full of yourselves i really do hope that conservative or some other party has a chance of getting into power in manchester then the people of manchester will see what a mess of manchester labour has made over the years.Labour had to sell its housing stocks off because labour wasted millions of ratepayers money over the years.I can give you dozens of badly thought out labour (MCC) IDEAS THAT WENT DOWN LIKE LEAD BALLONS. b-of-the-bang was a recent one ,and are the ratepayers of manchester still paying for the cresents that were demolished in hulme and the flats that had to be torn down on grey mare lane??PEOPLE IN GLASS HOUSES comes to mind.

Track record of the LIB DEMS? what about the track record of MCC and the waste of ratepayers money on lots of jollys for the boys, not to mention all of the lost causes (b-of-the-bang) i would like to print all the other waste of ratepayers money that MCC and its gang have wasted.so dont go trhrowing stones.(i dont like the lib dems) And i dont like the green party but i would rather vote for one of them before i would ever vote for a labour council again.

Bhatti should resign as a Councillor and then stand again as a Tory and then let's see how many votes he gets.
Come May, they won't get a single Councillor elected, thank goodness.

Youcan change your mind as can others. BUT you now need to 'stand down' and seek re-election. So the people that either voted for you or your initial party can tell you if they agree.
It's the only ethical move. You can't claim to be representing the people that voted for you at this point.
Gareth Quinn (03/01/2008 at 11:22)
Well Michael i'm sure we would have heard you say the same thing if he would have joined your party?
Thought not!

Surely this goes for labour priministers as well dosnt it? "Brown unellected PM" THEY ARE ALL RATS THAT DESERT THE SINKING SHIPS to benefit themselves.

This situation is not the same as Brown replacing Blair as prime minister though, ace. Both are from the same party and this has happened quite a few times where the prime minister has changed mid term.
John Major, James Callaghan, Harold Macmillan, Anthony Eden and Winston Churchill were all mid term changes
Dave Morgan, Sportcity, Manchester (03/01/2008 at 20:47)
Having met Faraz Bhatti yesterday, I look forwards to working with himself, as well as other former Labour, Lib Dem and Green members. Together, we are building a progressive alternative to Gordon's Brown's failed New Labour administrations.

I doubt people commenting on this article were even born.
The Tories did privatise a number of services but New Labour have continued pretty much on the same line the line on which they slated for years.
Labour have been in power now for 11 years and we have seen scandle after scandle and have proven they can't be trusted on most things
Did you know also the amount of money lost through selling national gold stock is nearly double lost on Black Wednesday.
So much for Gordon Brown and his New Labour party

The effect is the worst of both worlds and why we are still heading down into the depths of the abyss
