A MURDER hunt has been launched after one man was shot dead and two others were injured in a New Year’s Eve shooting.

Four men were in a car parked on a street in Crumpsall last night when they were approached by at least one man who opened fire on the vehicle.

The men drove themselves to North Manchester General Hospital – where a 26-year-old man was declared dead from his wounds.

A second man, aged 27, suffered back injures and was transferred to another hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

A third man was treated for a minor head injury. The fourth occupant of the car was uninjured.

Detectives have set up a major incident room to deal with the shooting, which took place on Huxley Avenue at around 5.30pm yesterday.

The fatal shooting was one of several firearm incidents which took place in Manchester on New Year’s Eve, prompting fears of increased gang activity.

Shots were also reported fired in Levenshulme and Withington.The force confirmed that a fourth man had been shot in an unrelated attack.

The man was discovered in the Trafford division of Manchester with a wound to his back, and taken to hospital.

The spokesman said: "About 6.27pm a male was discovered in Washbrook Drive in Trafford having sustained a gunshot wound to the back."

He was described as being in a serious but stable condition.

Is there a chance that the police will have to make an arrest now even if its just to reasure the public that they have some kind of control of our "friendly" city.

Thats right blame the police. There are are over 200,000 crimes commited in manchester each year and with perhaps i would suggest with less than one thousand officers on the street at any one time accross Greater Manchester they cant be everywhere all the time. I am sure that all the officers who put their lives on the line everyday of the year would be more than happy to take the criminals off the street, there is no problem arresting these idiots however securing a conviction is a different matter and whilst the courts continue to give less than poor sentences ie community service and deferred sentences there is no deterent. So go on continue to blame the police, really you should be looking at the government and the court system.

Nemo you are completely right, i agree with you whole heartedly.

Manchester is fast becomming a very scary place to live, i fear for my child having to grow up in this environment.

Nemo's correct. The police are not the problem. IT'S THE LACK OF POLICE. I visited UK recently and was surprised by the absence of police visibility. Stop supporting ($$$$) layabouts and unmarried teen "mothers and build some prisons.

Nemo,I agree with everyhing that you say regarding the Goverment and the courts,,but why for example have no arrests been made on the 25 gunmen and whenever there are reported shootings that seems to be the end of the matter. Im not against the police but they are supposed to be there to protect society,not looking to fine whoever hasnt paid road tax or arrest people that make comments that offend other people.

More Police isn´t the answer either. More police equals more crime, not less. The causes of crime need to be fully understood. And the cause of crime is simple really, it´s the breakdown of marriages, families and therefore communities.

David i am not sure which 25 gunmen you reffering to but do you know who they are ? if so you should tell the police!! Because that is the biggest problem everybody knows these crime have occurred but not everybody knows who committed them! I am sure the police have their ideas about who committed a particular crime however ideas do not lead to arrests without a complaint from a victim or statements from people who witnessed said incidents. The people who know who committed these crimes are not so willing to come forward either because they fear becoming a victim of crime themselves or they are part of one of the gangs. you like i may not have an issue in providing eye witness accounts to the police but these people dont live in the same society as you and i and dont have the same moral values !!

Pandora you're correct. The disintegrating family unit is the cause of many of society's problems. This has been caused by well-intentioned social engineers. If you provide financial support to unwed girls having babies you devalue the traditional family. There's no consequences for the so-called "fathers".

I have never heard so much rubbish as stated by "pandora" why is it that when these young thugs commit a crime its because they are from broken homes,nobody understands them or they are the result of one parent families, there are thousands of children raised by single parents they dont all go off the rails,many single parents have no choice but to raise thier children alone due to the loss of a partner are thier children going to turn out bad, what we need is more police and tougher sentences,build more prisons if they are needed, but also stop making young offender/prisons like hotels by giving the poor little mites so much to do in there ie: DVD's,TV's,pool tables, gym's, and god knows what and start treating them like the bullying,violent,nasty people they are and give them a sentence that fits the crime, get rid of all the do-gooders out there who want to pamper these thugs and the crime rate will go down.

Too much money is wasted on low-risk crime targets. Both crime and prison populations could be reduced dramatically by focusing on the “power” criminals who commit the most crime. More police on the streets, only reduces street crime. Cities with more police officers have more crime. That is probably because cities with high crime rates hire more officers. But it is hard to separate cause and effect, and, assuming that the officers do deter crime, to figure out how big the effect is. More police does NOT imply less crime, there is less crime where there are less Police officers.
