Crackdown on rogue drivers

MORE than 1,300 motorists have been caught out for driving offences this year in Manchester city centre and Bury.

The figures have been released following the last in this year's series of police operations designed to catch drink-drivers and those driving illegally without the proper documentation.

In a recent evening of stop-checks using number plate recognition equipment, nine people were arrested, including five for drink-driving, two for immigration offences, one who was wanted on warrant and one disqualified driver.

Police and community support officers set up checks across Greater Manchester.

Pc Steve Forrester, who led the Manchester and Bury police operations, said that despite drink-driving now being seen as socially unacceptable, and that there are obvious safety reasons for wearing a seatbelt and keeping cars properly maintained, people continued to throw caution to the wind.

He said: "People tend to think they are not going to get caught. We don't do what we do to annoy people or make money.

"If we were run as a business we would be bankrupt. It is about safety."

Police work alongside bailiffs, who chase people for unpaid court debts.

Those found to have no insurance have their cars confiscated and held in a garage until they pay a £105 release fee and storage costs of £12 a day after the first seven days.

This does not cancel out the prosecution which could involve further costs for failing to have insurance.

Numberplate recognition dosnt catch those ban drivers or drivers with no licences etc. Its time to start a stop check on drivers and check they are not using fraudulent or stolen documents,i have been a professional driver since i was 17 years old with no endorsements or accidents since i started driving but ive noticed over the last ten years or so that the standard of driving had gone down to a dangerous level .people dont use mirrors or indicators any more ,its time that we started to crack down on these terrible drivers. I see everyday, regular stop checks are the only way to crack down on these dangerous drivers.

I spend a lot of time in Spain & the standard of driving is far better there.Police spot checks & mobile traffic police are very visible whereas over here they are a rarity. Speeding inconsiderate drivers make our roads a nightmare.

Of course ANPR helps to catch unlicenced and unauthorised drivers - but it's not the only tool in the GMP box to get the illegal drivers/vehicles off the roads.

Ace, you really need to stay consistent; let's also set up roadblocks and checkpoints all over this great metropolis... that should alleviate the congestion you (apparently) care so much about.

Duhhhhhhhhh.

ANPR dosnt target unlicenced drivers it targets cars without roadfund licence and insurance/MOT if the car is insured/taxed/MOTd anybody can drive that car without being stopped unless they commit a offence i know people who have been driving like this for ten years or more.its time to do what tyhey do in other countries have driver checkpoints for all document checks licence etc .we have a lot of immigrant drivers in the UK who think they can drive without a licence or there old licence is ok. Its time to take these people off the roads...

totally agree with you ace, having previously been hit by an uninsured banned driver, the hassle this causes would soon change everyone elses minds if they had to endure what I did ...
Also, what about people hurt ny these uninsured inconsiderate drivers ...

Thats not to mention the people who are legal and buy and maintain the car and all insurance only to loose their no claim bonus because a uninsured driver damaged their car. i think uninsured drivers should be made to put £500 into a pot for peoples cars damaged by uninsured drivers .this way we would not have the need to claim off our own insurance.MAKE THE CRIMINALS (uninsured drivers with no licence) PAY FOR ALL THE CARNAGE AND DAMAGE THEY CAUSE..This also includes children who steal cars for joyriding make their parents put £500 in the pot.

Ace, you really haven't a clue, have you? Read my post... ANPR helps ther police get the dafties off our roads. If they have no licence, chances are they have no other documents. Get a reality check.
