A MAN who killed his estranged wife's kitten in a tumble dryer has been told he will have to serve the maximum jail sentence possible - six months.
Philip Gannon, 42, Walkden, Salford, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to the animal at Bolton Magistrates Court earlier this month and jailed for six months.
His appeal over this sentence was rejected yesterday. Experts were certain that the pet had been alive at the time it was put into the tumble dryer at the home of his ex-partner Jacqueline Hodson in Kearsley, Bolton.
It was believed the animal could have suffered for up to 15 minutes as it cooked in temperatures rising to 120 degrees.
The cat's claws had been worn down indicating that it had tried to scratch its way out of the dryer.
Gannon claimed that he had broken the animal's neck before putting it in the dryer. He had previously threatened Ms Hodson.
At the appeal in Bolton Crown Court Judge John Appleby said it was one of the worst cases of its kind and found no reason to alter the prison term.
What do you think? Have your say.

My point is that if someone is guilty of GBH on an old lady and someone kills a cat, then it it wrong that the cat crime is deemed far, far worse than an attack on an old lady. Maybe you agree, but if saomeone gets six months for killing a cat then someone dishing out GBH on a defenceless old lady should be given many years in jail.
I think that all people who buy pets should be, and I am not trying to be funny, vetted. Anyone can just go and buy a dog or cat but some people treat them appallingly. They still go out for ten hours a day, leave dogs in backyards overnight, some don't take a dog out for a walk etc.
I would love a dog but we are out most of the day, take six weeks holiday per annum and it just wouldn't be fair. I am far more friendlier to animals than many of those who choose them as housepets.
At the weekend a friend with some huge 'bamarama' type thing asked if I didn't like pets as I didn't have one? This creature was running all over the place knocking everything over and was out of control. I told him that I liked animals that is why I didn't have one. His wife has taken on it's features too which is hardly becoming. I told him so and now he is in a mood as I insulted the dog.
