Markets' first day of Christmas

HUNDREDS of shoppers - and a couple of TV stars - braved the cold to enjoy the first day of Manchester's Christmas markets, yesterday.

Hollyoaks actress Sinead Moynihan, who plays Beth Clement, was in St Ann's Square to open Oxfam Unwrapped selling alternative charity gifts.

And Chelsee Healey - Janeece Bryan in Waterloo Road - was spotted sampling the goods in New Cathedral Street.

Chelsee, 19, from Eccles, said: "There's great stuff on the stalls. The city's really in the Christmas spirit now."

There are also markets in Exchange Street, Brazennose Street and Albert Square.

Bavarian Cheesehouse stall holder Markus Waibel, 32, of Lindberg, Bavaria, said: "We love coming here each year, exploring the city and shopping."

Oh yes it's Christmas atlast. Having worked hard all year to better myself and my wallet, I just love the magic of Christmas, to ease off from the hard work, share with the common feeling of good will, spend loads of my cash, see the kids excitement, works doos, the crisp and unique wintery British weather, laughing at all those that hate christmas (because it shows that I'm doing something worthwhile) children in need activities, and of course, that one thing you cant lose...people you love.

We visited the Albert Square market on Friday evening and it was more like a cattle market! Not wanting to sound like Scrooge but the expansion of the market seems to have concentrated on more "bier kellers" and gluwein stands and this made congestion the norm rather than an occasional occurence. Next year how about using Albert Square for the drinking and eating stands and distributing the hard working but exasperated looking retailers throughout Lincoln Square and St Anns Square? That way the drinkers and eaters would have more room without getting in the way and shoppers would be able to concentrate on what's for sale rather than who is blocking the path.
