My partner bought a box of fireworks from Asda, when she got them home I noticed the size of these fireworks and on closer inspection found you had to have 25 yard exclusion zone around these fireworks (bit awkward in the back yard.)She got the fireworks a few days before bonfire night so there was no problem changing them for more suitable ones. I wonder if anybody else made the same mistake? TTFN

Its simple ban the fireworks,And leave it up to the professionals.Pay a few pounds each bomfire night to have a safe night out.

i would never light something as big as a suitcase. if its that big then it is more than likely unsafe!!!! hope the guy gets better soon though.

You do NOT light 25m retail display fireworks with a cigarette lighter! A portfire at arm's length or taper held at arm's length(yes,I know it's slow with one of these)is the safest method of igniting it. Most 25m fireworks do NOT go off as quick as this;MOST 25m retail display fireworks normally have a delay after the fuse is lit to allow the user to get well out of the way before they ignite and go off, this firework must have been faulty. And as for you Ace I refuse to listen to a h&s dogooder like you and others like you and the firebrigades of the UK that I SHOULD go to organised displays and I will continue to enjoy lighting 5m garden fireworks and 25m display fireworks taking suitable sensible safety precautions like wearing ppe while displaying them as for long as they are sold to the public so there! DISPLAY FIREWORKS require a spectator distance of 25metres to audience and users should wear ppe while lighting them(that is what is mentioned in BS7114:part2:1988 display fireworks requirements).

Timberman,the larger fireworks labelled DISPLAY FIREWORKS require a distance of 25m BUT in all honesty some of the smaller so-called display fireworks are rather tame and poor at that distance.

This accident Ace caused by this large firework indicates what would happen if the retail sale of regulated British Standard 7114 retail fireworks is banned;unregulated unsafe firework imports(not compliant of any safety standards whatsoever)like this would end up in the hands of the public,these fireworks probably don't comply with BS7114:part2:1988 like the ones sold by reputable companies do(Dancing Red Devil/Boom Time/Men Shun/Standard/Black Cat/Kimbolton/Cosmic and other well-known names). BS7114 fireworks wouldn't go off suddendly like this;most of the BS7114 fireworks have a delay to allow the user to get a safe distance away before it goes off,these were probably unregulated unbranded or obscurely branded imports with no documentation/no certification etc on them.

Any form of explosives/fireworks should not be sold to the general public,Fireworks should be banned totally and organised firework displays should be the order of the day.its not the size of the fireworks,ive seen two year old children with massive burns to their hands after picking up a sparker while still hot ,fireworks are not worth the damage and pain they cause each year.BAN THEM TOTALLY.

I heard this guy bought these large suitcase fireworks from a salesman who pulled into the service station where he worked;these fireworks were probably unregulated dangerous imports of unknown origin,and they'll probably get sold to the public if legal sales of BS7114 pt2 1988 retail fireworks are banned. This illegal trade in dangerous fireworks is not worth risking the consequences of a retail sales ban on fireworks for.

You're a killjoy spoilsport and a fuddyduddy Ace, this man bought these rubbish dangerous fireworks from a salesman;you think a retail sales ban on BS7114 compliant retail garden and display fireworks will necessarily stop the trade like this in poor quality dangerous dodgy potentially lethal and possibly deadly fireworks to the public? Unless you can control the underground trade in dangerous non-BS7114 blackmarket fireworks,unless you can stop criminal gangs/roguetraders/fly-by-nights and unlicensed firework hawkers/vendors from getting hold of unsafe uncertified unclassified import fireworks and selling them onto the public,unless you can stop people getting them from Europe and beyond or via the internet and setting them off/selling them onto other people,and unless you would have laws in place to stop idiots trying to attempt to make their own fireworks from household chemicals and substances and/or trying to mess around with legal pyrotechnics such as distress flares and theatrical stage effects,then you WILL NEVER STOP FIREWORKS. Some US states are once again allowing the sale and use of fireworks for the 4thJuly celebrations because prohibition has lead to people getting hold of and setting off fireworks illegally and prohibition is nigh on difficult to enforce(and you can't put a policeman on every street corner looking and listening for firework use/misuse and discharge because they cannot be in several places at once unless you're clever Ace). What makes you think a ban on fireworks will work in the UK? Unless you can put the things in place that I mention to stop illegal sales and acquisition,then as i've said before you'll NEVER wipe it out. What makes you think that police and local authority environmental health officers are gonna go round stopping and prosecuting people for letting off and discharging fireworks in the face of a ban Ace? This article annoys me as I am the neighbour of the family where the incident took place.1.They dont work in the alleged garage, they own anumber of them across Manchester.2. Any excuse to let of fireworks at this house is the norm.3.We thought our windows would be blown in due to the excessive noise of the explosions that went on for well over an hour at well beyond 10o/clock at night. 5.This was the second night in a row where fireqworks were let off. 6.Their guests threw bags of flour and sprayed ketchup over our cars and buildings, and they carried on revving and racing a lamborghini or possibly a Ferrari up and down Belmont Road at well after midnight.I am fed up with people who think they can let off these rediculous fireworks and to hell with everyone else. No I have no sympathy for them.

i am the uncle of the man taken to hospital and i would like to thank rob seabrook for his comments about someone his family loves.they have been very touching.we do have other neighbours not just seabrook who we seem to get on very well with. and my door is always open for comments rather than hiding behind the m.e.n.

But if you ban the retailsale of UK company regulated British Standard 7114 garden and display fireworks, you open the floodgates to the illegal blackmarket trade and sale in poor quality cheap nasty imports of dangerous potentially lethal Chinese fireworks that comply with NO safety standards at all and would seriously injure or kill the persons lighting them,or indeed watching them. If you buy non-BS7114 fireworks of unknown origins and/or brand names from people you don't know,there is NO guarantees of the safety and performance of those products, whereas if this guy had gone to an all-year round licenced firework retailer, at least with the BS7114 items(although you pay more)you know you're getting quality fireworks made to good safe standards and that will be just as enjoyable.
