IT'S been a familiar landmark on the Manchester skyline for decades, but Granada's famous aerial has finally been taken down.
A huge crane removed the beacon from the roof of Granada's Quay Street headquarters in the city centre.
A spokesman said: "The aerial hasn't been operation for about 10 years, and needed to be taken down. We planned the operation at the weekend when there was less traffic about."
Granada is considering leaving the building but is still deciding whether to move nearby or to relocate entirely to the new MediaCity at Salford Quays.

Unfortunately, the tower (which I thought was some sort of cooling tower, not an aerial) was the best bit. Hopefully they'll put the remainder of the building out of its misery before too long.

Couldn't disagree more - it's a wonderful bit of late fifties architecture, one of the best we've got in the city. It was also built to a very high standard which means it's more or less in its original state. And its oldest parts have the distinction of being the first purpose-built television studio in the UK. It symbolises all that ITV isn't these days - quality programmes and a commitment to the regions. I think both the FT and the New York Times both came to the conclusion that from about 1960 to about 1990 Granada was the best commercial television in the world and in those days just about everything Granada produced came from Quay Street. Unfortunately, it's not listed so I guess that it's only a matter of time before it disappears to make way for yet another block of cheap, shoddily-built and bland flats.
O tempora, o mores!!
