A POLICEĀ investigation is under way after a massive blackout left approximately 20,000 homes without power.
The homes, in Greater Manchester and stretching into Lancashire, went into darkness around 7pm yesterday.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said he understood that electricity had now been restored to all homes.
The spokesman said efforts were being made to establish what had caused the power cut.
Homes in Salford, parts of the city centre, Cheetham Hill, parts of Bury and Leigh were affected.
The blackout came on one of the police force's busiest nights of the year when officers have to deal with trouble stemming from Halloween.
Yesterday arsonists broke into and torched an electricity sub-station in the Miles Platting area of Manchester.
The fire left 848 homes without power for several hours.
Nobody from United Utilities was available for comment.
We will bring you more on this story shortly.

I saw several ghouls and ghosts knocking on doors and patrolling the area.

Isn't it also significant that "The blackout came on one of the police force's busiest nights of the year when officers have to deal with trouble stemming from Halloween."
This Americanised garbage has gone much too far. It is not our tradition to go around disturbing people's privacy and making them feel threatened knocking on doors after dark, demanding treats. This is just begging with costumes on. Of course, for the shops it's making a profit that counts above all else, never mind the poor frightened pensioners.
Next up is bonfire night....sorry it's been bonfire night for the last 3 weeks.
Don't you just love this time of year?

Memories though of being sent home from school during the power cuts of the 1970's and hunting round to find candles and a battery operated radio LOL.
