VERA Duckworth is to be killed off from Coronation Street in a heartbreaking storyline leaving husband Jack a widower.
One of British television's most enduring characters is being written out as actress Liz Dawn battles emphysema. Her departure will be screened in a special episode early next year.
Insiders say the scenes will be full of the show's characteristic humour.
Bill Tarmey, who plays Vera's roguish husband Jack, has signed a new contract committing him to the show until September 2008. Viewers will watch him adjust to life without his `little swampduck'.
Show bosses are closely guarding the details of Vera's exit. They have written three storylines and will decide which to use at the last-minute.
Liz says she is looking forward to retiring.
"It is going to be very emotional filming Vera's death scenes but I do think it is the right decision for the character," she said. "I have had 33 marvellous years in Coronation Street and will miss everyone very much."

Was I seeing things? Does anyone know if it was her? I'm assuming the show was filmed before she joined the street.
Cheers
