OLD Tom, the famous strong ale with the cat logo produced by Stockport brewer Robinson's, has been voted tops among winter warmers once again.

The dark ale, brewed locally for more than a century, was a winner at the annual World Beer Awards.

Judges tasted hundreds of beers from around the globe.

Old Tom leaped through the early rounds. When it reached a blind-tasting, it was pronounced the cat's whiskers by top brewers.

yes - now the smoking ban is in force one can appreciate what a good job tobacco smoke did in masking all the other odours produced by a pub full(ish) of drinkers...nice

Winter warmer I don't think! I drank many many pints of Old Tom and suffered from slurred speach, an instability of the legs, and an inability to judge distances. In addition, I suffered from a headache and dry throat the next day. Avoid at all costs.

I remember hearing in the early 70's ....Paul McCarthy & Wings were recording at Strawberry Studios and one thing Paul liked to do after a session was go and have an Old Tom the "old fashioned way"
Apparently, (on a cold night) they use to heat a poker in an open fire and then dunk it into a glass of Old Tom....Strange, but true !
