MORE than 1,700 sex offenders are now registered in Greater Manchester - a rise of 4.6 per cent over last year,
The highest numbers are in central Manchester, Wigan and Oldham, according to the Justice Department.
The total for all 12 districts is now 1,722. Justice Minister Maria Eagle said today: "Protecting the public is of paramount importance to the government.
"We have one of the most advanced systems in the world for monitoring and managing dangerous offenders.
"But we're not complacent and continue to look for ways to improve how we manage these offenders, and how best to support those responsible for the task locally."
The latest figures are in a joint report from Greater Manchester chief constable Michael Todd, prison service assistant director Ian Lockwood and probation chief John Crawforth. They say: "Sexual and violent offences are dreadful crimes which deeply affect the lives of victims and their families.
Impact
"Their impact can be profound and long-lasting, leaving victims feeling unsafe.
"Though risk can never be totally eliminated, the public of Greater Manchester can be reassured that through our strong partnerships we are doing everything we can to cut crime and make our community safer."
Of the 1,722 registered sex offenders living in Greater Manchester, 165 are in central Manchester, 148 in north Manchester and 121 in the south of the city.
In Salford there are 158, Tameside 113, Stockport 141, Bolton 171, Wigan 162, Trafford 91, Bury 145, Rochdale 149 and Oldham 158.
The report says the 4.6 per cent rise has been fully anticipated as more offenders are added to the register.
These are now being managed by the Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangement.
Terry Grange, public protection spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers, said all police chiefs were ensuring strict compliance with the sex offenders' register.
He said: "Today's report highlights the fact that staff are not shying away from dealing with offenders who breach their registration requirements."

And as for your comment about rapists who prey on women; are rapists who pray on men somehow more acceptable to you?

The comment was about somebody aged 16 being on the register, but irrespective of that, your argument seems to be that, if somebody is stigmatised for the rest of their life for having consensual sex, that’s ok, because they were asking for it. That’s the same kind of argument that some people use to play down the seriousness of rape. I don’t think it’s a valid argument in either context.

As for child sex abuse, a 16 year old having sex with a 15 year old would be guilty of having sex with a minor and would therefore be classed as a child sex offender.

For those that say they should be known and outted etc....in america its a different kind of community that will look...watch...and report any mishappenings. here in england its a different mentality dont you think...we wont look...we'll hound and smash windows...we wont watch..we'll drive them out....then...they're gone! underground and no-one will know where they are!!!
NOT A GOOD IDEA!
I have a good idea for each sex offender, that doesnt involve shooting or notifications to all...and when i'm in parliament i may just make attempts to implement it!
