DAVID Cameron has condemned today's 'irresponsible' society in a top of the bill speech in Blackpool.
Speaking without a script, the Conservative leader set out to inspire his Tory troops ready for a possible autumn election and won good reviews for his smooth performance.
In a personal section on today's 'broken society', Mr Cameron spotlighted the tragic drowning of Wigan 10-year-old Jordon Lyon.
The case hit the headlines because two community support officers failed to enter the water after the youngster vanished.
"We're going in the wrong direction today, towards a less responsible society, as we saw with the community support officers who didn't jump in to save the life of a young boy," said Mr Cameron. "We need to change."
Earlier, he had told the M.E.N. that while community support officers played a useful role, they were not a substitute for police officers - and he criticised ludicrous red tape and crazy health and safety rules.
In his wind-up speech at the conference, Mr Cameron said the time had come for `national citizen service', where they would say to 16-year-olds that they had responsibilities in society to their local community.
Gym
"I launched this programme at Amir Khan's gym in Bolton," he said. "He's a fantastic man. He doesn't just want to be the best boxer in England or the world, he's built a gym to bring people off the streets, to give them something to believe in.
"And I agree with him that this sort of national citizen service for 16-year-olds can teach young people the self respect and the social responsibility that we really need to make our society stronger."
The conference opened under the shadow of gloomy opinion polls, but Mr Cameron's final speech proved popular with the delegates.
"Undoubtedly the biggest threat people face in this country is the crime on their streets," he said.
"Our prime minister has said that our society isn't broken, but when you think of 20 children shot dead on the streets of London, of gun crime doubled, a boy on a bike shooting Rhys Jones - I wonder what society the prime minister is living in?"
Mr Cameron was given a standing ovation after he had called on Gordon Brown to call a snap General Election, which would let the people decide who can make the changes the country needed.
"Call that election," he said. "We will fight. Britain will win."
What do you think? Have your say.

If he wants to see a broken society maybe I should give him a tour of my old neighborhood in the states!

If he will really do what he promises, I would vote for him!
But is it all just hot air to get voters on side? Only he knows I guess.

Read a Dail Mail paper from the 1950's, they talk of youth who no longer respect their elders, of a crime epidemic out of control....sound familiar?
There has always been crime, and there have always been cunning politicians like Cameron exploiting it and pretending that they can be the white knight on a horse coming to save us all!!
come-on-city (04/10/2007 at 12:31)
Just what time are you referring to where Britain was a civilised nation, where everyone was nice, and everyone looked out for one another, and politicians were noble???
Now besides books from the upper class that painted this picture, the truth was not at all like this!
jacko101 (04/10/2007 at 12:47)
Now though, there appears to be more people with no moral fibre whatsoever and those people don't care who they rob, stab, shoot, kill etc...
If you don't think it's getting worse, then I'd have to ask how long you've been here and where you came from?
And to back up your argument you are quoting from the Daily Mail? You must be nuts!
Cameron is using crime to help get votes, no doubt about that, but that's because he knows it's a problem and hopefully he'll do something about it that this current government seems unable to do.

I knew exactly what the headline would say before you I even looked at it. Yes Firearm offences has risen, But overall crime is down.
Also a rise in firearm offence doesnt mean more crime, it means more crime now involves firearms whereas before it would be knife etc.

I have read the link you gave me. Isn't it interesting that it says this:
Total homicides, age 5-16 (1995): 44
Total homicides age 5-16 (2005/06): 20
Total homicides "gang warfare, feud or faction fighting" (1995): 12

I suggest you remove your head from the sand and look around, listen to how people feel - never mind the figures. People are scared. Why??????

We dont want to see the place you lived in the states to see a broken society? I want "MY" Society back that ive known for years that my dad had as well not something that was imported from america or parts of europe or russia.I want kids to enjoy the life that i had in britain before we started to import a garbage lifestyle from the third world or bad parts of america. So dont start comparing our way of life to others. We want a lifestyle we had before. civilised, polite, family orientated,With decent manners, and above all else ,under control.
jacko101 (04/10/2007 at 14:01)
Not sure what planet you are on at the moment, but violent crime is getting worse and the prison sentences aren't strong enough.
come-on-city (04/10/2007 at 14:27)
Exactly. If all the statistics point to crime being low (and even the statistics by people who hate the government), then why is public perception of crime at an all time high???

Violent crime is not getting worse. The statistics from the government do not back that claim up.
Ask yourself this:
If the statistics show that crime has decreased from 1995, then why do the media keep using the same data and claim that it is rising?
If the governments own figures show crime is falling, why do they keep insisting on not telling the public this but continue to push more laws through?
come-on-city (04/10/2007 at 14:32)
Politicians are scaremongering. They tell us we need more and more laws when their own statistics do not back up what they are saying.
Look at the statistics I have pulled out after a small glance.
Crime has decreased, yet David Cameron is saying otherwise. Why is he doing this? Because he is pandering to and playing on public fears.

So you want my life story? I was born and raised in Bedford (Bedford-Stuyvesant), Brooklyn. My Mother was American, My Father, was British and from Moss Side.
I would travel to Moss Side about twice a year. I loved it becuase believe it or not I thought it was safe.
I have emigrated here after marrying my wife.
Now believe me when I say in the states, I have been shot at when I was a kid, burgled, attempted to be robbed, etc. Here in Moss Side, not one thing has ever happened to me or my family.
Britain is fantastic, dont let politicians tell you otherwise to gain votes, when the true picture is that it is a relatively safe place to be.
come-on-city (04/10/2007 at 14:45)
And thats what is frustrating. Shouldnt politicans then tell the truth that crime is actually decreasing. Instead of playing on public fears to gain themselves votes?
