A FAMILY from Manchester say they had to make their own way home after being left stranded at a Spanish airport at the end of their sunshine holiday.
The group had been booked onto a bmibaby aircraft from Alicante, but after a wait of more than five hours, passengers were told the flight had been cancelled.
They were told to collect their bags and handed letters telling them that the no-frills airline would book them onto alternative flights within 14 days `subject to availability' .
But the party said they were then left to spend an uncomfortable night sleeping on the floor inside the airport terminal as, like hundreds of other passengers, they had nowhere else to go.
The group used a mobile phone to make an emergency call to relatives in Britain to ask if they could locate an alternative flight with another airline and book seats as quickly as possible. But after spending more than £1,000 to book seats on a Monarch Airlines flight which left the next day, they were told they would not get a refund of their air fares.
Sandra Groves 62, from Gatley, said: "It was an absolute nightmare, and we can't believe how we were all treated."
Mrs Groves, who is disabled, said: "We were just left stranded at the airport in the early hours of the morning.
"There was nobody from the airline to tell us anything. We were so desperate that we had to take matters into our own hands. We had to be back because the rest of the party had work commitments."
She said: "We were told there was a delay on the flight when we got to the airport on Friday night, but there was no further information after that. Three other flights including Ryanair and easyJet were also cancelled, and we suspected we weren't going anywhere."
Mrs Groves who travelled with her daughter, son in law, niece and two friends, said: "Fortunately, we were able to contact my nephew who booked us onto the Monarch flight. We later found out that the next bmibaby flight would not have been until the next night.
"We were advised we should be able to get a refund of the extra money we had to pay out through our holiday insurance, but our insurers said because we were offered an alternative flight by bmibaby, and opted to go with another airline, we weren't eligible."
A spokesman for the airline said: "The flight from Alicante to Manchester was cancelled due to adverse weather conditions. Passengers were advised they could book on the next available flight subject to availability. bmibaby also advised passengers that a refund would be made for the value of the unused flights."
What do you think? Have your say.

I have experienced very similar circumstances involving cancellation of a (late night) BMI flight from Alicante to Manchester and subsequent purchase of a Monarch ticket (says something about BMI compared to Monarch) and money WAS refunded.
If those affected kicked up enough fuss, and this article is just the start, then the shabby airline, hiding behind contract wording, will end up paying. Keep at it and use all the avenues open to you.

They are home and safe now, after one whole night in the airport.
MEN, why do you pander to these moaners?

But no, wait for it - they want compensation (for the airline not endangering their lives!)What a surprise.

The flight was initially delayed due to bad weather conditions, something that none of us on the flight were complaining about. We were supposed to take off at 21:45, then after the initial announcement at 21:45, we didn't hear anything until around 1 am. There were various scenarios being put to us by the "information desk", ranging from a flight landing in 15 minutes with a 45 minute turnaround, all passengers being taken by bus to Valencia, the flight being cancelled.
I can fully appreciate that flights do get cancelled ( I travel a lot with my job so it wasn't the 1st time something like this has happened to me). The fact that we had no information, no representative from BMI to ask, a copy of a fax that didn't even state that it was from BMI, no offer of any form of refreshment etc was bad enough, however when the information line that they gave you stated that they were not open until 8 am the next day, and also the fact that we probably wouldn't be able to get through due to it being high season, we didn't hold out much hope. We were finally told to go to the Swissport desk where we would be able to find out what happened next. All that happened there was that the arrogant member of staff closed the desk and shouted to us all that we would have to book ourselves another flight.
It then took another 4 hours to arrange a flight back home with another airline and to a different destination.
As already stated, I fully appreciate that the flight was delayed, even cancelled. What I didn't appreciate was the total lack of information, help and care in general. At no point did BMI even suggest that the passengers would be placed onto another flight (we were told specifically we would have to sort ourselves out and claim back). As for the customer care..If you can call leaving pensioners and families with toddlers being left to sleep on an airport floor customer care then BMI are second to none.

The explosion of cheap air travel has meant that many of the once beautiful beaches of Europe are swamped with the hoi polloi.
I travelled once on Ryanair - never again. I'd rather pay four times as much and feel civilised.

I completely agree with you in that you would rather pay more for a decent airline. It wasn't the case of us not being able to afford anything other than a cheap flight, we just didn't think anything could go so badly wrong on a flight that takes 2.5 hours. As for going to Blackpool, I'd rather fly with BMI through thunder and lightening storms every day than risk being started on by the boozed up idiots that wander around Blackpool nowadays. It maybe nice to see the illuminations etc but it's the rest of the package you get when you go there. You can keep it mate!
