A JUDGE has slammed the Jeremy Kyle TV show, calling it `human bear-baiting'.
District Judge Alan Berg was sentencing a man who, at the recording of the show, headbutted a lodger after he had an affair with his wife.
He told David Staniforth that producers of the show deserved to be in the dock with him as they had provoked the attack, which took place at Granada Studios in Manchester.
Referring to the show as `trash', Judge Berg said he recognised Staniforth, 45, would not have committed the offence if it wasn't for the persistence of producers and researchers who contacted him six times to try to persuade him to appear.
Staniforth - who had been married 26 years - had refused each time, Manchester magistrates' court was told.
But, he told the court, staff from the show falsely claimed his wife was considering reconciliation and his daughter threatened to withdraw contact with his grandchild if he did not.
Judge Berg said the exceptional case did not warrant a community punishment, but instead ordered him to pay a £300 fine and costs.
He said: "It seems to me that the purpose of this show is to effect a morbid and depressing display of dysfunctional people whose lives are in turmoil, often in some perceived or actual dispute with each other for the purposes of titillating bored members of the public who have nothing better to do in the morning than watch trash TV.
"It is less a show than a form of human bear-baiting - that is how I see it - which goes under the guise of entertainment. It should not surprise anyone that these people, some of whom have limited intellects, become aggressive with each other.
"This type of incident is exactly what the producers want."
He said he did not condone violence in any way but said he recognised that the offence would not have taken place if it wasn't for the show.
At a previous hearing Staniforth, from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, admitted assaulting Larry Mahoney who lived with the couple as a lodger but later set up home with Staniforth's wife Jennifer, 42.
He said he had set out to keep his feelings under control but said the presenter of the show had `wound him up' by calling him `Davey boy'.
A spokesman for ITV said: "It is made clear to all guests prior to going into the studio that no violence is ever tolerated.
"We do not share the district judge's opinion of the viewing public and the people who choose to take part in our programme."

I think people will look back in years to come and view Jeremy as an innovator, a humanitarian and a hero.

Of course, if that is actually your opinion, then you and Jeremy deserve each other?
This show is drivel and the people who appear on it are the sort of low life scum that are infecting our society with idiot children. Who watches this rubbish anyway, seriously anyway?
The host, the producers and ITV should be ashamed and charged!

Not sure that is true. Some of th emost violent cultures do not have access to TV.
On the other hand, I do agree that TV spews out a lot of source material for the more idiotic to work with.

That Judge should get them in the dock and give them a period of days in jail and put that on tv for us all to see and as he does he should look at the camera and say
"its 30, 40 30" (suggestively licks lips)
you'd be embarassed to know him wouldn't you?

I think you are wrong here. Like others said if what you say is sarcasm then very well done my boy but if it is not then what a disgrace that quote is and just highlights what the show does. It has managed to manipulate this poor boys mind. Dean please try-watching Trisha from now on, there is plenty we can all learn from that.

Talking down to people, raising his voice throughout the show obviously to provoke a reaction.
If this show is not 'human bear-baiting', then why is Jeremy shouting from behind his burley security guards?
If people really are in trouble somewhere in their life, then they do not need to be paraded in front of someone such as Jeremy Kyle, who seems only to be doing this for his own personal gain.
Then to follow this up on some shows with clips of him helping people in Africa. Although, this is an extremely good cause, it just seems that there is another reason for this. It all works towards presenting Jeremy Kyle as a 'God-like' figure.
I don't have anything against talk shows, but I find it disgusting when it is so obviously done for personal gain and profit as Jeremy Kyle does.
Pure trash!

i completely aggree with dean it makes me laugh how you're all saying you only watched it twice and stuff like that because people who watch it a lot would know that he is helpful and a hero to many, he gets people off drugs, off the streets, solves problems in families and many other relationships and there would be no better person to help than jeremy so what if he gets money for making his shows he deserves money because he's putting up with so much from people who go on his show and yet he still helps them at the end of the day nomatter what they call him or say 2 him and he listens to everyone and he shows respect to them who deserve it he only talks down to them if they start doing it to him first and at the end of the day he makes life a lot better for his guests and i don't care if you think im an idiot for watching his show i bet a lot of you watch jerry springer and that show is a lot worse than any other talk show for violence and much more profanity. every talk show has a few mistakes. people go on that show for help and help is exactly what they get.

How many boneheads can there be in the world?
I always try and catch it if I'm off work. It always makes you feel better to see these people parading their tawdry lives for all to see.
Keep up the good work Jeremy!
