Detectives launched a murder inquiry after the body of David Brown, 24, was found in a garden on Chorlton Road, Hulme.
He lived in the street where he died, but was originally from Burnley.
A post-mortem confirmed he died of a stab wound to his left leg.
His family said: "David was a fun-loving son, who enjoyed life to the full.
"Although he was a quiet person, he had lots of friends.
"He had aspired to go and live in Spain to teach English, and had just enrolled to learn Spanish so he could achieve his dream.
"We are devastated about what has happened and will miss him more than we can say."
Detectives have launched an appeal for witnesses.
His body was discovered just after 7.30am on Friday. Police cordoned off the scene and forensic officers examined the area.
A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said officers from the Major Incident Team are following a number of lines of inquiry.
Anyone with information should call Longsight CID on 0161 856 4343 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

His smile and humour is being greatly missed within our store, as is his proffesional hardworking attitude.
The world will be a lesser place without him.
