Hundreds of youngsters took part in the opening ceremony for the games which are open to seven to 17-year-olds from Saddleworth, in Oldham.
Over the school holidays, volunteer coaches passed on their wisdom and tips to the children.
The next two weekends will see the hunt for gold reach fever pitch.
Current champion team LGFG (Lydgate, Grotton, Friezland and Grasscroft) will be hoping to fight off fierce competition to retain their title.
They will be up against Delph-Denshaw, Diggle, Dobcross, Greenfield, SAS (Springhead, Austerlands and Scouthead) and Uppermill.
Organiser Steve Bradley, said the opening event was `absolutely fantastic'. He added: "Everything went smoothly. It was a wonderful thing to see all the kids being cheered on by the adults.
"We train the kids over the six week holidays and then there's this for three weeks.
"But we do not want it to end there.
"We encourage a lot of them to go on and joining local clubs and carry on playing the sports they have learned about." Tweet

This is a great event and made better by the work of the unsung volunteers who give thier time each year. I am very proud that two of these are my daughter Carole and son in law Colin. They work very hard for LGFG and I hope they win again this year. Well done to all who take part.
