THE grandmother of St Helens dog attack victim Ellie Lawrenson has been acquitted of her manslaughter.
The jury of seven men and five women at Liverpool Crown Court found Jacqueline Simpson, 45, innocent after a six-day trial.
Ellie was killed by her uncle Kiel Simpson's pit bull terrier on New Year's Eve after Mrs Simpson, who had smoked 10 joints and drunk two bottles of wine, let it in.
Hearing the verdict, Mrs Simpson wiped her eyes. Speaking to the jury, the judge said: "This is an unusual case which had given rise to very strong emotions.
"Suffice to say, the greatest sentence passed in this case is a life sentence of regret this lady has passed on herself."
The jury heard that she was also charged with possession of heroin found in her home after police searched it in the aftermath of Ellie's death.
Mrs Simpson left court flanked by family, friends and her legal team without saying a word.
Asked how she was going to get on with her life and for a tribute to her granddaughter, Mrs Simpson, dressed in her court clothes of a black jacket and trousers, looked down at the ground and continued her 200-yard walk to a friend's car. She was driven away in a silver Nissan Primera.
Colin Davies, assistant district Crown prosecutor for Merseyside, said: "There is no doubt - and it was accepted by the defence - that Jacqueline Simpson owed a duty of care towards her granddaughter. However, the jury by its verdict have accepted that, if there was a breach of her duty of care, it was not such that it amounted to a crime."
He added: "This prosecution cannot, of course, bring Ellie back, but when anyone is killed following an attack by a dog and where there is evidence of a criminal offence, the police will investigate and the CPS will prosecute."
What do you think of the verdict? Have your say.

I hope she can now get on with the rest of her life, she should never have been taken to court in the first place.

Are you really that tree huggingly stupid?
A young defenceless girl was left in her care and she decided to get off her head on drink and drugs then let the dog back in the house. Im not saying she should have got a life sentence but without a doubt should have been convicted and sent to jail.
If it have been a Child Minder that had done this they would have been sent down.
You are a degrace and should be ashamed of yourself.

little ellie died in her care because she decided to get out of her head instead of taking full care of her grandchild. very wrong and at the least she should of been found guilty and given a suspended sentance on the condition she gets therapy and help in quiting the drink and drugs. this she must also do to honour the memory of her beautiful grandchild. she at least owes ellie this much.

i believe the MEN reported at the time that the dog was not let in when the grandchild was visiting; i would say that 2 BOTTLES of wine and marijuana would be enough to impair the judgment of anyone, let along a TRUSTED member of a family.
a horrible horrible way to die for little ellie, jury, what were you thinking?
shayna (11/09/2007 at 15:34)
it would seem obvious that given the stigma this horrendous incident will leave on her, she will turn to drink/drugs to help her through.
too late for little ellie, but not too late to do something constructive in the name of ellie, but only with proper help....

Have you got a banned dog, a grandchild and a mother who is a druggie and and alchoholic. If so try mixing them together. Stop hugging trees and get real

I think the grandma has probably already started to come to terms with her behaviour & the loss a little girl because of it, she has to live with that for the rest of her life, a prison sentence would not have made any difference.
And yes, she probably will turn to drink & drugs to cope with the knowledge of what she's done.

Whenever he's on telly he's walking like he's on a trampoline.
Anyways, her gran didn't kill her but she was drunk and stoned whilst looking after a 5 year old which is pretty disgusting to be fair.
