HOUSING in the city is one of the starkest indicators of the divide between rich and poor.
Average property prices across Manchester were £142,942 in the last quarter of 2006, compared to £214,295 across England as a whole.
But there are huge differences in prices across the city. In Didsbury West, average prices stand at £251,021. But in Harpurhey it is £77,076.
The city has higher than average numbers of low-value, pre-1919 terraced homes that the report says has `led to a lack of choice in the market'.
This is being addressed through a number of projects which will see more than 10,000 houses cleared and rebuilt.

It saddens me to read that you are helping with the propaganda of manchester town hall and property developers who are only interested in demolishing pre-1919 houses in so-called poor areas in order to profit non-interior property developers and their families. The so called pre-1919 houses have history that surpasses that of manchester townhall -manchester townhall itself built in 1878 or so - most were built before 1857 and celebrated when Queen Victoria or her husband Albert revisited Manchester in 1857 to mark a great event. We Mancunians do try to be as good as Londoners - Londoners do not demolish pre-1919 houses - they improve the interiors - London Councils have been doing so since 1997 and have been extremely successful. We Manucanians can imitate them and do better for our so-called poor area houses by being reminded of our architectiral history than being ashamed of it. Most pre-1919 red-brick houses all over the United Kingdom ost were built by moston red bricks from Moston town itself, so we have alot to be proud of. Please kindly ask all our superior members of our society to love and respect our poorer members of our society and not wish them not to live next door or compete with their own children for jobs et al.
We trust the above meets with your approval.
Kind regards,
Your friendly neighbourhood manchester.
