City centre residents reported feeling the tremor just after 5.45 am today and experts have confirmed that there was a quake measuring 2.4 on the Richter scale.
There were no reports of any injuries or damage to property.
Earlier this month, an earthquake shook the south of the city with the tremor felt most strongly in Stretford, Hulme, Didsbury and Tameside.
The quake, shortly before midday on August 10, measured 2.5 on the Richter scale and caused buildings to lurch and shake.
Tremors
There were four other smaller tremors detected between August 10 and August 23.
Seismologists at the British Geological Survey (BGS) in Edinburgh said the earthquakes had all occurred in the same region where a "swarm" of around 150 tremors were detected between October 2002 and January 2003.
The largest event in that series was on 21 October 2002, when an earthquake measuring 3.9 on the Richter scale shook the region.
The BGS says there are usually around eight or nine earth tremors reported every year in Britain.
A spokesman said: "It's special when it happens in a city because more people report it.
"We have earthquakes of this magnitude occurring all the time, about nine a year on average."

I feel a war brewing, selling your soul to the devil will make you powerful, but for a price.
I was reading the article in the MEN 3rd Edition... and I saw this:
"Eleven people are known to have died as the result of Bristish earthquakes. 6 were killed by falling stones, two fell from upper floors, 2 died of shock and one commited suicide"
Can someone explain that last one? An earthquake cause someone to commit suicide?
I wonder how many other tremors we've had that they haven't reported before this & since the last spate, always pays to be prepared.
..and volcanoes, LookingForLogic. When was the last time you read of a volcanic eruption in Piccadilly? Spooky or what?
